Cutting is all about rigorous adherence to diet. But what diet? I'm a big fan of knowing what your caloric set point is and reducing by 500 cals. I like mostly low carb except post workout. That means almost no carbs (except from veggies) on non-workout days.
If you workout 4 times/week that means you'll have 3 lo cal/lo carb days and 4 med carb/cal days. This approach keeps your body from going into starvation mode.
I also think LSD cardio 5 days a week is the way to go when cutting. I like max incline treadmill walking for an hour. It won't tax your body during your period of lower cals like HIIT work will.
That's my take on cutting, but there are a million ways to do it.
PS-I wouldn't do GVT during a cut, or at all unless you're on gear.

I'm trying to cut for the Summer, so that being said, I'm trying to change my routine up.
Yesterday was my first day doing deadlifts since nearly a year ago when I pulled out my lower back. I stuck to a low weight (barbell + 2x25lbs) just to make sure I perfected my form. I still don't think it's perfect, but it's something I'll have to continuously work on.
As far as the major change in the program goes... I'm debating whether or not I should do a GVT [German Volume Training] program or a HST program for cutting. I'm not positive of my current BF%, but I'm assuming it's something around 12-14%. Ideally I'd like to get to 7-10%. I'm 5'10 and currently weight 174lbs.
Anyone have an expertise on this? I'm assuming slackr...

I also like the old school proven way of cutting Slacker advises
But then again, everybody has to get to know his own body and see how he responds and which way is best for him
Concerning Cardio,I have been using it more cautiously over the years after having overdone it a few times..
Nutrition really is the key to anything you want your body to do/look like

I've never maxed out ever, but I fluctuate around 10lb in BW... but at 174lb and 5'10, my "typical chest" workout as of late has been
12 x 195
10 x 205
8 x 215
then 2 more sets til failure at 225... which usually ends up looking something like 6 or 5 x 225.. and then an addition 4 x 225
At my best in 5x5 lifts, I was doing 225...
What this means my max bench would be... I have no idea

Eh, who cares about impressive really you know? Outside of bodybuilders, which I consider to be "non-functional" lifters (no disrespect meant, body building is for looks by definition), maxing on bench doesn't mean much. It's kind of like being able to squat 1k lbs but not be able to do a pistol squat. When are you actually going to be laying perfectly flat and braced and need to use your bench strength?
Not to mention you have to basically de-train your rep max to get to 1RM
