Your top 5 best cars ever built, and why.

The reason I chose the 993TT and essentially no "modern" day sports/supercar is that apart from a very select few, pretty much no cars over the last 15-20 years have been revolutionary or ground-breaking (CGT, Veyron etc are exceptions), and are becoming more and more the same (458 / MP4 for example).
Is a GT3RS the best sports car today? Yep, probably. But the GT3 is only slightly better than the previous model, and the next one will be slightly better than that. That is not the "best car ever made", that only makes it "the best GT3 over the next 4-5 years". The E30 M3 was at the time better than what the RS 4.0 is today, when people still daily drove Nissan Cherrys and a DeLorean was considered a sports car. And is the F10 M5, with its faux speaker engine sound, a better car than an E34 M5? Technologically, yes. But for anything else, never.

I don't preach much BMW because I'm just not a huge fan.

I love reading the explanations and passions behind some of your choices. It's cool to see the reasons different people are drawn in by certain cars. Mark's explanations are spot on and I can't disagree with any of them even though my list may look slightly different. And I definitely agree about the super high end one off's with the exception of the Zonda. I probably wouldn't include it in the best 5 ever built, but the Zonda is pretty special and is just plain beautiful imo. It is head and shoulders above the rest of those no-racing history hypercars. I don't care about Kseggs and the others besides them being cool, but I would absolutely take a Zonda if I could.

48 Chevy pickup, an original Fcar P4 and a factory Pcar '72 ducktail. Give me a original 748 Ducati and a MV Agusta Senna 750. Done.
Best thing is I can do it if I work it right...

5. BMW M3 GTS (2010)- Not being overly flashy, this car looks great in every way. With a 4.4 L engine and a boost to it's hp, it is awesome.

4. Ferrari 458 Italia - As you can see from my avatar, this car is one of my favorites. The engine sound is unforgettable with the high rpm.

3. Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 (2012) - This is my dream lambo of choice. Insanely fast, and everything about this car looks sexy. Especially in orange color.

2. Porshe GT3RS 4.0 - After really liking the GT3RS, the 4.0 adds a much better kick with the bigger engine. I have never saw one in real life, but everything about this car looks very well built.

1. Bugatti Veyron - Although expensive, this car is phenominal. After seeing one of these in real life, I couldn't list this any lower than number 1. I just went

Its tough to pick only 5, but here goes;
1) The 1973 Porsche 911 RSR. The epitome of Porsche engineering and beauty for the street. Lightweight, fast, purposeful and stunningly beautiful. Only 55 were built for the street and if you can find a real one, be ready to pay well over $1mil for one.

2) Porsche 917 - The best looking, best sounding, fastest, most beautiful yet bad-ass race car ever. IMHO embodies everything a sports racing car is and ever should be.

3) 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra S/C - the most bad-ass car ever to sit on the floor of mainstream auto dealers. No production car has even come close and its been 47 years since it first appeared on showroom floors.

4) 1962 Ferrari GTO - There is a reason it is among the most expensive and desirable collectors cars in the world.

5) The McLaren F1 (all variants)- The one and only. The first and only supercar ever built with ZERO compromises on engineering. Every piece of the car associated with the driving experience and feel are the absolute best it can possibly be.

^Thank you DJ. Which car would you bump from my list for the CGT? My guess is most people would say the 427 Cobra, but consider the following. The 427 Cobra was available for a fairly reasonable price for its day at your neighborhood Ford dealership. To this day, it still sets the standard for the most extreme, loud, scary, awesome, beautiful car ever to sit on the showroom floor of a neighborhood dealership. That is saying quite a bit considering the L88 Vette's, Vipers, ZR1's, etc that followed it. They are all tame compared to the belching, fire breathing, monster that is the 427 Cobra. Despite its beastly personality, to this day the 427 Cobra stands as one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
I am a Porsche fanatic, and if my list were extended to the top 10 cars ever built, the 365 and the CGT would be on that list.
However, IMHO in my top 5 list, the CGT would have to bump the F1 off. With all due respect to Porsche and the CGT, the F1 is a superior car in almost every measure. I do say this as an "arm chair" author, as I have only driven one of the cars on my list (427 Cobra, and not even a real one at that
) and most importantly have not driven a CGT or F1, but if you were to line the two of them up, spec for spec, piece for piece, the F1 is superior to the CGT in every way except for looks where the CGT has is beat hands down.
