Is the 991 (with decent spec) overpriced?

Were we all complaining about the price of the 997's back in 05 when they were launched or was the economy too good for anyone to care? Is this thread a sign of the times?

+1. That's what we need. A new 550 Spyder!

I don't want a mini-Boxster (isn't that redundant?) - I want a small, lightweight, rear-engined, low-option, manual-transmissioned, 2-seat coupe. Think of a decontented, 2500-lb Cayman. That's what I'm talking about.

I understand just what you're saying. I bet when the 550 Spyder is revived, knowing Porsche a coupe version will soon follow.

I don't understand this thread at all. Porsche 911 are not supposed to be an affordable car for everyone. I don't own a Ferrari but I never went on their forum and complain that Ferrari is expensive.

BTW when I purchased my new GT3RS about 2 years ago, I thought it was the best bargain performance car and I was very happy that I got an allocation to order.

Car buying experience is supposed to be happy. If you have to second guess your purchase because a BMW or Acura appears to be a better buy, then the Porsche is not for you.

Reading this thread is sort of like someone walking into a 5 stars hotel for a room, but he keeps complaining that for cheaper price, the 3 stars hotel down the road also includes free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, etc. Well, which room will you recommend the guy to stay in?

I never complained about the prices of my previous Porsches, but to cop a line from our British friends, Porsche seems to be "taking the piss". It's like they know we'll buy their cars, so let's keep jacking up the price. As far as comparing them to Ferrari, Ferrari has been ridiculous with options for years. Additionally, Ferrari is at a completely different price point from Porsche.

I only pointed out the Acura because they are an example of a manufacturer providing good value. Porsche is poor value, but most of us have overlooked it because we love the cars, the brand, etc. I think what some here are pointing out is that Porsche is going a little too far.

My father bought a 1965 356C from a dealer while he was still a young man. I know a lot of young officers and senior NCOs in the military that have stretched to buy a 911 because they were attainable. If Porsche continues down this road, they'll lose a core element of their desirability - ATTAINABILITY. When people can't afford them, they'll lose relevance.

Sorry for my rant, but don't paint with such a broad brush that we should all go "buy Acuras" or we should stay at a 3-star hotel since we can't appreciate a 5-star hotel. That's bullshit. It's legitimate to complain about Porsche unnecessarily hiking prices. My Carrera S in 2006 was decently optioned and $92K. You can't even get the base car for that price now, and one optioned like mine was will be $110K. That's what I'm talking about.

^Chris,

I'm also sorry for my rant. Please beware that my post is not directed at you, or any particular person. I'm just offering my opinion.

Porsche as a company sells cars. As far as I'm concerned, it can list its products at any price that it wants to. If a group of customers felt that the price is too high, then they don't need to buy from Porsche. Over the years, the only Porsche that I think was ridiculously priced was the 997.2 Speedster, yet there are still a group of customers that bought it.

Don't underestimate the buying power of others. There is a reason that a company priced its products a certain way. Companies that make money did their homework. They're not stupid.

BTW I think the 991 is reasonably priced. It is a 911, and it is priced like a 911.
