When Aston released the V8 Vantage some years ago, and more recently with Audi releasing the R8, those were always billed as "911-fighters" and I always thought to myself, these cars are all easily 100K+, well above the asking price of a 911! Porsche would be quite happy to have their proven flagship sports car compete with others costing 20–30K more, and BEATING them in comparison tests. (This was back in 05–07, when 911s were 80–90k)

Well, it's clear that Porsche wants to bring the price difference closer to those proposed rivals. They believe that their product will stand up to the competition in that range, and for the loyalists that can afford it, the brand/product love they have for it when they buy one proves that Porsche got the price right.

The risk however, is that any price advantage Porsche carried over its rivals like the R8 and Vantage are close to being negated, so for everyone else looking for a solid, usable sports car in that price range, they can send a loud and clear message to Porsche that they've priced their 911 too high by simply spending their money somewhere else.

Are you serious? Price aside MORE people select 911's over the Aston and the R8.

Aston's, sorry but they must do better then their ford interiors and they depreciate faster then both the Audi or the Porsche. and the R8, as good as it is; I know several guys who quickly traded their R8 V10's for another 997.

While I may not be 'in love' with the new 991; it'll surely be a bench mark car- once again.

All that aside, mark my words: the 991 will outsell both the Aston and Audi R8 (any varient) combined.

Failure? I don't think so. Watch and learn.

Whoa there dude, calm down. I never said anything about the 911 being a better or worse car than the Vantage or the R8, just that as prices converge on each other more, it makes the consumer consider options they wouldn't necessarily have before. In fact, I believe I stated that the 911 would commonly BEAT the competition, despite at the lower price point—all the more highlighting the better value of the product.

However, as Porsche raises the price of their car to higher and higher price tiers, they are intentionally or unintentionally testing their clientele's willingness to stay loyal to the brand.

The 911 is faster, more usable, more reliable, and better looking than either the Vantage or the R8, and its cheaper than either...

I think the point that is being missed is the fact that when the price of the 911 increases, so does the option of other manufacturer choices for the consumer. This isn't a statement that the 911 is inferior, yet rather that I just may prefer a 997 GT3 RS or the Aston for the same price point.

titanic is an unknown quantity at this point
Porsche wants to bring the price points up for the 911 for sure. That might get the Aston and R8 buyers to switch. I don't think they care about people who can't afford it. They want those who can afford it to switch from other brands.

See, this is interesting. For those of us who 'sell' for a living- anyone will tell you that it's not about the dollar amount of said product per say- but it's about the Perceived Value.

I've said this before and I'll say it until I'm blue in the face or it ceases to be true; the person who strokes a check for $100,000 can also afford a car that is double the price.

You heard me right. People don't just wake up one day, do all their research, and say 'geez, if I break that $100k mark, I'm broke!'. They stroke the check and it won't affect their life in any way shape or form. (well, the 911 will surely give them many smiles lol)

You guys bitch and moan about the price of new 911? Really? The car hasn't even come out and you're comparing it to, what exactly? An Aston? Really? Or Audi? - two chassis that already exist and NEITHER car can claim victory over the EXISTING 997, let alone the 991.

Are they great cars- ABSOLUTELY.

However, the 991 will continue the trend of the 911 being the bench mark sports car.

I will fully admit I dont like the new 991 being so big. I don't like it's interior. And I think it looks 'so so'. That having been said - dollar for dollar- nothing in it's price category (new) will be nearly as good a value for grin factor or reliability. Nothing.

You want unique? You want that exclusivity? Be a big boy and step up to a new Ferrari 458. For twice the price. And personally, the 458 is one of the BEST deals out there. Truly remarkable car- well worth the money.

Otherwise, what are your choices? New M5? Ya right. Car will be a fast, but heavy sloth. Won't even come close to the handling of the new 991. And Porsche knows this. Nothing in the 100,000k range -for new- will come close.

Otherwise, go buy a used 360,430 or Gallardo if you feel those are better deals.

Porsche will continue to out sell everything in it's market segment with the new 991.

Mark my words.

So you'd rather have a used GT3RS or an Aston for the same money? I'm assuming you're a cash buyer then?

Have you driven the Aston? Which one? How about the 3RS? Which year?

First of all, I like what I've seen of the 991 so far, and will probably order one.

And yes, the options add up in a hurry. But that's because they're so freaking great!

To me, the 991 offers two tiny rear seats, which are helpful when my boys both want to go with me. It also offers great looks, performance, and handling, while giving me rock solid reliability if I want to hop in it and drive to either coast, without worries.

And many of the options are things that you don't find in their competitors, and make it great. I'm happy to check those options boxes!

Adaptive Sport Seats Plus? Check.
Burmester Audio Package? In a car? Are you freakin' kidding me? Check!
Porsche Ceramic Composite Breaks? All Day long.
Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control with PASM Sport Suspension. Um, yeah!
Alcantara and carbon and leather everywhere? You bet.
Etc., etc.

Honestly, my 991 S spec is almost $150k sticker, but it would be such an incredible car it's crazy.

Just my $.02.
