"As expected, Diego Sanchez (23-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) and fellow welterweight Matt Hughes (45-8 MMA, 18-6 UFC) will meet in a UFC 135 main-card bout.

UFC executives recently made the long-rumored bout official.

UFC 135 takes place Sept. 24 at Denver's Pepsi Center. A title fight between light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson headlines the pay-per-view main card.

Sanchez vs. Hughes could take the co-headlining slot.

Sanchez recently picked up his second straight win with a close but highly competitive unanimous-decision victory over Martin Kampmann at March's UFC on Versus 3 event. "The Ultimate Fighter 1" middleweight winner and recent lightweight competitor returned to his more natural welterweight division in 2010 and suffered an uninspired decision loss to John Hathaway. However, he's since rebounded with wins over Paulo Thiago and Kampmann that both earned "Fight of the Night" awards.

The Greg Jackson-trained fighter now meets Hughes, who hasn't fought since November 2010, when he suffered a quick, 21-second knockout to B.J. Penn. Hughes, who long had been considered the best welterweight in MMA history, briefly contemplated retirement in 2008 following back-to-back losses to Georges St-Pierre and Alves. However, while fighting only occasionally, the UFC Hall of Famer had put together a three-fight win streak with wins victories Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida before the recent Penn loss.

The UFC hasn't hosted an event in Denver since "UFC: Ultimate Ultimate 1995" back in 1995. The Colorado city also hosted UFC 1 and UFC 2 in 1993 and 1994, respectively."

Sources Refute Lombard's Claim That Marquardt Turned Down Bellator Title Shot

"With his suspension likely to end any day now, Nate Marquardt is the biggest name in MMA's free agent market. One possible landing spot could be Bellator Fighting Championships, where middleweight champion Hector Lombard has repeatedly pleaded for a fight with Marquardt.

Officially, the company will not comment on any interest in Marquardt just yet, but in a recent interview with Sherdog, Lombard claimed that Marquardt was offered an immediate title match against him and declined.

According to two sources inside the organization though, that claim is false. While there may be interest in Marquardt, he would not be granted a title shot upon his entry into the promotion. Company CEO Bjorn Rebney has always been adamant in his belief that a tournament format is the best way to determine a top contender, and he has not wavered in that stance.

"Bjorn has never, and will never, offer a fighter an immediate title shot," a high-placed company source told MMA Fighting.

Bellator is currently ramping up for its fifth season of fights, which opens on September 10. The promotion will hold another middleweight tournament, with the winner to challenge Lombard.

Among those in the eight-man tourney field are Alexander Shlemenko, Bryan Baker, Vitor Vianna, Jared Hess, Brian Rogers, Sam Alvey and Zelg Galesic. That leaves one slot available in the field.

A longtime middleweight star, Marquardt began the drop to welterweight for his eventually scrapped fight with Rick Story in late June. Even after being released from the UFC following his inability to gain a therapeutic use exemption for testosterone replacement therapy, he has maintained that his MMA future lies at 170 pounds."

He went from being in line for a title shot against a guy he matches up well against (Shogun's less than great takedown defense combined with Rashad's explosive takedowns and top control made for a very winnable fight for Rashad), had to sit and watch from the sidelines as his teammate got his shot and won decisively, then was supposed to fight Jones in what would have been a super-hyped, highly watched title fight, to fighting a good prospect that he had major striking advantage over, to having to face the worst possible matchup for him in a non-title fight.

I'm not even a fan of his, but that sucks."
