Number one. Leave the car on, when detailing the engine, and a good 10mns after too.

As for the cleaning, I'd use compressed air and a brush if its just dust.. Meticulous...maybe, but you wont have to worry about water destroying things.

You could also use a steamer...that works great too.

Just search a couple of detail threads to find out about the sensitive parts of your engine. Most modern engines are sealed up pretty good, but some olders ones can give you a headache.
