Safe Way To Clean Engine Bay

Safe Way To Clean Engine Bay
Looked at my 911's bay and it is nasty. Whats the safe way to clean it. I don't assume I can just blast water in there with all the electronics and computers.
Can I cover up the electronics and then spray? Soaps? Degreasers?
Thanks all.
PS: I don't want to go and buy some special soap and such. I have typical cleaning items available if that will work.

Just sandblast it. That way you won't get the electrics all wet.

Seriously though, get a soft bristle scrub brush and mix up some soapy water and just carefully wipe everything down. Use some degreaser on any stubborn areas.

This may sound crazy but I've found that if you go to a self carwash place you can use the degreaser option followed by the water spray to get most of it clean. In newer cars the electronics all have weather seals to keep road muck/water out.
It's the quick and easy way to get a good 95% job. If you want to go crazy then break out the elbow grease, simple grean, and rags.

The best time to clean the engine bay is during a full detail. I recommend to spray down the engine bay with a mild degreaser, and brush any hard spots down as best as possible. You then want to use a low pressure pressure washer, to clean and rinse, but be careful of the MAF sensor. You will also want to raise up the spoiler if possible to clean anything in the crevices. Air dry with an air nozzle, and dress the plastics with a water based dressing and re dry with the air nozzle. If you are doing the bottom of the engine, you will want to remove all the protective plastics, and simply degrease the bottom, and pressure wash. On 911's I use steel wool and degreaser to clean some of the grimy components.

I cover any obvious electroincs with plastic bags, battery, alt, maf ect. then wet down the engine, spray on some simple green and then rinse it off. here is a photo write up I did......
