Is the 991 (with decent spec) overpriced?
#21
I'm sorry Alex, but seriously 35k Pounds of "decent spec"?
I just configurated "my" version in the GB-Configurator, I don't know about the 1.1k "Vehicle Tracking System" which seems to be a must-have feature but my final price with sports seats, PASM -20mm, BOSE, etc. just jumps over 85k Pounds.
So in my "decent" spec (without PDK, my left leg is still working without any problems...) the car has an option-price tag of about 10k.
Of course you can add different rims, and other stuff but another 25k for options?
If I look at the German prices and I think the differences from country to country aren't that big:
The new 991 S costs roughly the same as the "old" 997 GTS (RWD).
It has some features like PTV, the 7-speed manual or the 20" rims and is a new, improved car. The GTS offers 8 hp more and has center lock rims and the sports exhaust system.
In my conclusion the 991 is "as overpriced as any Porsche" but not more...
(I think 20C4S uses the right words... if you add options which aren't needed like leather stuff or carbon/alu/wood interior you can increase the price very fast...)

i had a nicely optioned 08 c2s that i bought new for mid 80s. I thought that was priced well. Similar car optioned today is going to cost me 110k, I think the base price has been creeping up and the option list is not helping much either. I feel i can't buy a c2s for less than 110k.
It's getting frustrating that price of everything is just going up the wazoo but my income. :-(
tolls are going up on the road by 20-50%, food by 5-10%, lunch by 35%. yet even busting my a$$ and doing a good job, I am only getting 6-8% increase. I need a change of profession to keep up with the world.
Porsche will not have a hard time selling these cars, as there are new millionaire every minutes and people have somehow lost value of money IMHO.
Everything is relative now. Relative to what?????

I don't think it's overpriced, I think that Porsche has simply come up with more and more options that it's customers think they need.
When PCCB was made available, it sounded real cool, and they had some takers. Now many people have learned that it's not necessarily that great of an advantage, and there's many drawbacks to having PCCB (replacement cost, for instance).
Now we have PCCB, PDK, PSE, PDCC, PDLS, Sports PASM, Sports Chrono Plus, Adaptive Sports Seats, Burmester, and all of the interior trim options.
It's not that the 991 is overpriced, it's the we (the customers) are drinking the Porsche Kool-Aid that we NEED all of these things.
I've said it before, there's a difference between my DREAM 911 and a 911 that I'm HAPPY PAYING FOR.
If I were to spec a 991, it would have:
Sports PASM (make it lower)
Sport Chrono
7spd MANUAL
Sports Seats Plus (no need for adaptive & want ventilated seats)
BOSE audio package (I'd rather hear the exhaust than a $5K stereo)
Heated/Vented Seats
Sports Steering wheel
It comes out to about $110K...reasonable for a new 991 and none of the other options that I won't ever take too much use of anyway.

dallascajun, you're totally right!
For road use, nobody needs PCCB and also stuff like PDCC should tested first instead of making it a must-have already.
Germany isn't comparable to Texas but additionally you could delete Sport Chrono (the watch looks strange anyway), vented seats and BOSE of your must-have list (your road trips may be a little bit longer than here but driving from Stuttgart to the Nurburgring (roughly 200 miles) was fine with the standard sound system...)
I drove our 997.2 (without S, without PASM and other suspension tweaks) last week-end and it's such a great car. You can't even think of the limit of the car while respecting the rules just a little bit...
@ Speedandtech:
Once again, I'm not familiar with the US-prices, but why is your new S about 15k more expensive than a 08 model?
We had an 997.1 S and the offered leasing rate of the 991 S is just over 50€ higher compared to the old model.

well, different strokes for different folks. I can respect the 'purist' mentality but since the 911 is esteemed as an everyday sportscar, I prefer to get use out of it and not have to buy a second car. in saying that, I do need PDK and tire of going 1st-2nd, 2nd-1st all day. doesn't matter if I am in the city or suburbs, back up's, construction, etc., it's congestion all the time. considering that I am heavily on the brakes because of driving conditions, PCCB does appeal to me as I have experienced brake fade on the steel brakes in rush hour. the fact that I live in my car, yes, I am interested in the Burnmeister sound system and on and on.
Porsche is just out of control on their options though, whether it be the pricing, quantity, packages, etc.

Arling is right about the options. Porsche disgusts me with their option pricing (I'm looking at you, too, BMW). Why can I get an Acura TL for $40K with full leather, nav, bluetooth, Bose, etc. when NONE of that is standard on any base Porsche?
There is no excuse for a base 911 with a $90K+ sticker to not have full leather, nav, BT, etc. NO excuse.
And Carrera, I've purchased three new Porsches (2x 911, 1x Cayman) and NONE of them were as ridiculously overpriced as the 991. The only other car I think is as badly overpriced is the Panamera. Wait til the S7 comes out - it'll be almost as fast as a Panamera Turbo for 40% less money. There's no excuse.

I tend to think this is Porsche's effort to push the 911 further upmarket so that the Cayman/Boxster can grow larger and more $$$ in order to fit in the 500 as the base level sports car.
The only issue with this line of thinking is that moving upmarket doesn't agree with increasing production volumes. Of course, some of that increased production is meant for China...which also happens to be playing an increasing influence on the size, styling and options of the 911.
