New Watch Ideas

Looks gorgeous, I want that exact watch. I am down the the green bezel, but the black looks sharp and goes with everything.

Hi, I don't know you, but this achievement you speak of must make you limited edition among your plebeian counterparts, or at least that's the impression I'm getting. Not a problem. The Zenith El Primero says i know watches and watch history, yet i choose to buy an understated watch that isn't the same profane phallic symbol on the wrist that a car salesman would wear, so that's why I recommend it. It links both Rolex and Zenith and pulls it together in a very classic piece.
That being said, a Sub is certainly the wrong choice as it's probably the gift one gets from getting into university, etc, something mundane like that. Certainly then, the Sub is as common as muck, so if you really want to set yourself apart at 18, I'd recommend a ceramic sub or GMT in stainless steel. If you must go Rolex, which I actually recommend (if you don't see it as an old man's watch) I'd go for something like this:
this should go for about 7kRight then, so that's Rolex. And stay away from gold unless you want to give off the air of middle aged-ness. And for Pete's sake, stay away from Breitlings and PAMs at 18yo, its wrist porn, in a bad way. Exception being a classic 'panda' Navitimer on leather strap, or Navitimer World on bracelet. If you must must get a Panerai, get a 111h (classy, but too many fakes out there) or a Radiomir setup (same predicament). I don't think these will be ideal choices, but you be the judge.
As far as being 18yo and driving a 2008 Honda Civic Mugen (the combination clearly militates against the typical image of Rolex, Pam, Breit, not to mention nouveau-riche offspring), I think you should recognize you position in life and be wiser with your money. Take the bulk of the 10K in money and buy physical gold and silver. Bury that mothertrucking stash in the ground, then take remaining 2-3K and seriously consider a Tag or a Hamilton. Not the first time I've recommended them, but they can communicate achievement (esp in the context of 18yo staring out) and an appropriate amount of savvy when it comes to watches. Hamilton is an American brand and rich with history. I recommend the x-wind, a rugged and reliable piece that I've owned and gifted for it's unbeatable durability and character:

As far as Tag's go, stay away from anything plastic or with 'F1' in the name (sorry guys, just my honest opinion). I rec'd a Tag LINK day date

or a newer edition Carrera with day-date feature (better movement, more usability, better resale)

If you see exclusivity, this brand doesn't have it. The aquaracer and most other Tags are a guarantee of watch banality. The Silverstone has a 70's (almost pronstar-like) appeal that is a nod to the Heuer watchmaking heritage and may be appealing to you if you are looking for something out of the ordinary.

If you haven't killed a man yet, stay away from the Blacksteel. My 2 cents. This is a watch for someone who already has a decent watch collection.
Which makes a point that comes full circle. If you, at 18, want to make a statement via a watch, that means something. Mostly that you will keep buying watches for life achievements. So a good start would be... you guessed it, Rolex. Fack!, I hate to recommend a Sub, but that may not be a bad idea. Sub no-date or a used Sea-Dweller may make be the perfect start to such a collection. A deepsea will not be a popular choice now, but this too will be limited edition watch when Rolex moves on to another design.

Oddly enough, this may be the proper amount of bling, functionality, and class that you may be lookin for...
So I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you see yourself as limited-edition, get a similar watch. Hope you enjoyed the read.
Cheers, and definitely let us know what you get. Trust me, it won't stop with the first watch.
(what are watchuseek and rolexforums saying ?)
