You've clearly never had Umbrian food.

Agreed, but Venice sucks....

Yup, Modena. Real Fini. Favorite place ever, I have never been to a place without a menu. The chef came out and asked what we liked, dinner was made. Five hours of dining, food and talk we grabbed the limo back.

Modena is not in Umbria...
Though that does sound like an amazingly cool thing to experience at a restaurant.

If Italian road signs and generally insane drivers* don't bother you then drive. You have a lot more flexibility with a car than just taking a train to your destination.

*They may seem a little insane but they are actually very predictable. I actually prefer driving with them than with US drivers.

Grab the train, upgrade is about $10.00 US, doors are locked so you can nap, well worth the cost. Envious of you buddy. Have fun!

Think the wife would prefer that route... Sleep? Thought train ride was 2 1/2 hours? No?

It's dirty, smoky (not a problem if you smoke), and like others have said, there's really not a lot left of Ancient Rome.

Venice is a city unlike any other. The people are generally very friendly (unlike many Romans), there are many major tourist spots and even if not, you could spend days just walking around the city and not get bored. If you really want to go somewhere else, the Amalfi coast is beautiful -- try to make it over to Positano. It's worth it to hire a boat for a few hours or the day, as there are a bunch of small coves/grottos that you can't access any other way.
Rome is dirty compared to what? Bland cookie cutter vancouver with glass condo eyesores? Rome's artistic and cultural treasures are unmatched in Europe in my opinion. Yes unless you are into appreciating that type of stuff it is difficult for someone to truely enjoy Rome. I never found Romans to be unfriendly, totally opposite, Ive been in random mom and pop places to higher end restaurants, hotels and the hospitality has been excellent. I don't see how the OP is going to be able to do all of this itinerary in such a short time frame in Italy.
