Book a class at Front Sight and take their 4 day class before you decide.

I was pretty happy with the training I received.

I'm sorry but this is a pet peeve of mine. Caliber has nothing to do with how experienced you are or how good a shot you will be. My point was to dissuade you of the notion that you need as large a projectile as possible to accomplish the job. Though I live in a state that does not allow carry, I have a carry gun (for when I travel to states that will allow it.) I am a small person, and could never fit my 1911 on my person in anything other than a winter parka. I have a .32 for carry, which many people will make jokes about. However, I can conceal it without issue in anything I wear, and I can hit what I am aiming at. I am confident that if necessary I can protect myself with it

Any shot within the cranial-ocular area is lights out time, doesn't matter what caliber.
Two shots in the thoracic cavity with any caliber and it's also serious damage time.

Too many guns (blasphemy, I know). I don't think I've ever fired it - if so, it's been to the range once, for maybe 20 rounds.
I'm 6'1", 250, but that's a BIG gun . . .

Haha no kidding, I can't even pull the trigger DA, my finger doesn't reach. SA I can shoot it fine, and since it was designed to be carried cocked and locked--as god intended--I still love it. It's too big for me to carry anyway, I just shoot it for fun. Don't get rid of it, it's a cool piece!

Im not far from your age, and I almost got my CC license last fall. I ended up not going because I was busy, but I plan to in the spring. One of my good friends is an olympic level sharpshooter, and his advice to me was to get a revolver... its what he carries when he can. It may not be like driving a maybach, but carrying a gun is not something you need to flash around anyways.
