Haha. I personally can't stand Glocks but I don't think that they deserve telling people new to the sport that they have no redeeming qualities. Everyone has heard of them and wants to try one. Besides the G18 is awesome.

Getting back on track...
Do you know anyone that shoots regularly? Get them to take you to the range. Hopefully there's a place nearby that rents a variety of pistols. Try them all. If you can afford it, buy several that you like and start shooting them regularly. Common stuff you'll probably try will be Glocks, HK, Springfield. All are considered to be good quality. My advice is to stay away from gimmick stuff like the Desert Eagle at this stage in the game.

We all shoot pretty much every week spring-fall but it's all clays. My family is a big trap family, I mean to put it into perspective until like 5 years ago my great grandpa has shot more registered clay pigeons than anyone else in the country, and we have two members who have won the grand american ect. Everything we do though is sporting clays, skeet, or trap. We have a couple old handguns but nobody uses them and I don't even know if I have ever fired one. My grandpa was the one that got me shooting and he, like everyone else in my family, hates hand guns and thinks they are recipie for disaster and he is right to some extent. My family is OCD about being sued so that's why I would never carry in public not because I would be uncomfortable with the weapon or anything like that, but just out of fear of the possible circumstances that could arise. You guys think I want to walk around with some cannon hanging out of the crotch of my pants, its so far from the truth though.

So, I think we've thoroughly abused the OP, and the take home message is:
Take the dang class and then come back to talk shop

Well I understand what everyone is saying but it has accomplished nothing. You would think grown men would have learned by now how to be more persuasive. Bullying someone and denigrating them is not going to get them to do what you want. You are a fool if you think telling me "you shouldnt have the right to own a gun" is going to disuade me from getting one. Considering most of the people on this forum are so much older than me and so much smarter, how is it that none of you understand the basic psychology of someone my age? Instead of being productive like you Nerual they go on these rampages to prove what? To accomplish what? What does anyone gain from those sorts of replies? If I am so immature and stupid wouldn't people who are "passionate" about this issue try and educate me so I don't make a poor decision? What about being an asshole is going to help educate me? When you treat someone like a piece of shit you pretty much invalidate your opinion because the inherent human nature to be narcisistic prevents people from listening to advice form people that don't like you.
Regardless of my posts, my intent was never to become some pistol whipping spioled teen. I wanted to buy a high quality gun to take the range and place in the Ferrari or Maybach in the event of a car jacking...which has recently happened to a very good friend of mine. Regardless of the circumstances in which I might use it in the future, I want to START learning about the repsonsibilities of owning/carrying a gun and I wanted a good gun to start with end of story. It's not I want to go shoot stop signs or show the kids at disney world how crazy I am. Maybe my posts didn't make that evident but there is no point in bullying people it accomplishes nothing.
I am really glad I posted this thread though because it really shows me how critical people are about what people post and how wrong we can all be.

You want advice? Short of joining the military, this is what I recommend.
Get a membership at a shooting range and take private lessons. Take tactical survival courses- some are day long, others you go away for days or weeks at a time. Shoot thousands and thousands of rounds so that you're comfortable shooting, even when tired.
Don't get a jewelry gun for carry. Shiny guns can reflect and give away your position when you want stealth. Most standard guns are plenty reliable and accurate for your needs. A revolver is most reliable. A Glock is the most reliable semi-auto. Get the gun that fits your hand best and offers the most natural line between the grip and the sights for your posture. Handguns from most major manufacturers are very good- Glock, HK, Sig, Smith and Wesson, Kimber, Springfield Armory, Beretta, and Taurus give you plenty of choices. Any caliber that hits is better than one that doesn't. I usually carry a .45, but I've been shooting for a long time, I'm heavy, and I can crack walnuts in my hand. I own a 9mm and I'm never ashamed to carry it, and it packs 18 reasons plus one in the chamber that are pretty potent deterrents.
Just get a friggin' Glock and rack your brain over life's real problems.
