Handgun advice for a beginner...
I have been talking about getting a hand gun for a while, and now that I'm 21 and I can do the concealed carry school I think I might pull the trigger (no pun intended). I have been shooting rifles and shotguns (hunting/sporting clays) since I was about 6 so I don't need a life lesson on guns are dangerous but I have 0 experience with hand guns. I want to get something I can put in the Ferrari and the Maybach so if I'm in a bad area or whatever I have "peace of mind" versus thinking I will actually use it. I also want something I can go fool around with at the range for fun. I am the type of person that only likes the better things though, so I need some advice on getting the best gun I can. I want something with real fire power though I don't care if it has a lot of recoil if I ever use the thing I'd be so nervous I probably wouldn't hit anything anyways lol. If it does hit someone though I want them to go down none of this 9mm noise. I also want something that anyone who knows hand guns will respect and and appreciate so I don't look like Shirly the soccer mom with her little pistol. I want high quality and something that will never jam and a gun that could be used in combat if need be. If this is kind of un-specific please tell me I'm not really good at articulating what I want since I really dont know what I want.
Thanks,
Bill

First, good for you on exercising your right to carry. However, I noticed that you wanted something to carry for school; you may want to check on your school's policy before you do so. I know of several universities that ban any CC or even having a firearm on campus.
As for your questions you listed, as you know any gun will jam w/out maintenance; some are more prone to failure than others. Personally, I'd go the HK45 route. Caliber size should be determined on how well you can handle the recoil, and how comfortable you are holding it. Btw, I like 40cal also bc it's a nice compromise in carry and damage.
On a side note, I suspect this thread will have a lot of different opinions

Jesus, it is scary that someone like yourself is legally entitled to buy a gun.

A class sounds like a really good idea before you start thinking about carrying. Keep in mind that if you miss your target, the bullet will continue on and hit whatever is in its path. Carrying is a big responsibility, and it sounds lke you're looking for a status symbol more than anything. Maybe look into a bodyguard instead.

What a bunch of pansies. Thanks for your reply carbon, the school I was referring to was the concealed carry school in ohio to help you get your permit...not my university lol!!! I don't want to be on TV!!!
As far as owning guns I already have a bunch of shotguns. You guys, as usual, are being the internet "let see how much of a dick we can be" its so lame and I'm pretty surprised to see it here.
I will probably never carry this gun in public. I only want concealed carry so if I get pulled over and it's in the car the cops don't arrest me or do whatever it is they do. I also figured I might as well get the schooling to learn more about having a handgun ect. Secondly what the hell kind of jackass gets mad at someone for asking advice? This is a F-ing car forum, people ask advice all the time about what car they should buy, how is this any different. As far as a fashion accessory goes wtf are you talking about? I like nice things whether its cars, boats, planes or anything I don't buy cheap stupid crap because I would rather pay the premium for good service and quality, but I don't know enough about hand guns to separate the good from the bad.
I will probably never even discuss this with anyone I know, why would I want people knowing I have a gun. I really don't see how I made it sound like a fashion accessory at all.
Wow this is just so gay.

Lecture over, here's an answer:
You need to start firing as many different handguns as possible until you find one that you are comfortable with. The more you enjoy shooting it, the more you will practice. What type of gun you should look at for carry is another can of worms entirely, but I think that's a premature discussion because you need some experience under your belt before you carry anything. Sign up for that class.
Edit: I'm not trying to come down on you, but carrying a gun is a very serious thing and that is why some of the responses have seemed critical. I hope you do take a class and start a collection that you enjoy, and that you come to understand why you received some of the feedback you did. After a class, the number one thing you need if you carry is the number of a good lawyer experienced with gun law.

You should only be carrying a gun if you are prepared to use it. The only time it will ever be drawn is if you need to use deadly force, so if you don't want possibly shoot someone, do not have a gun with you.
Anything you intend to carry needs to be practiced at the range often anyway.
As stated above, if you do not intend to use the gun, do not carry it. Do not carry it if you are not confident that under pressure you can aim and fire the gun and hit your intended target and not a small child nearby.
I invite you to stand in front of me while I shoot you with .22 and see if you go down or not. The concept that some calibers are inferior and will not stop anyone is largely bravado. What matters more is that you are proficient with the particular weapon.
This is a deadly weapon. It is a tool, not a fashion accessory. No one will ever even see the gun you are carrying unless you are about to shoot them with it, so this is completely irrelevant. When someone invents a gun that will never jam, let me know. Until then, part of your training should include what to do if you experience a failure so that your actions become muscle memory.

I agree with everything you said and thanks for your reply. The point of me making this post was to get information, not act like I have it all. I imagine you were typing your reply when I replied just a second ago, but like I said I wont carry for a while because I know I wouldn't be comfortable taking someone elses life. The only circumstance this gun would be used outside of the range would be if I got car jacked or something in which case I'm pretty sure I would be fine. LIke you said though, if I want to carry ever, I need practice, which is part of the point in getting a gun...it's the first step. This isn't some I want to be rambo discussion. A .22 would be plenty of power just like a little 250 motorcycle would be enough for a new rider...but I would probably just get a 1098 even though I would dump it just because that's how I am.
