Pagani Huayra Top Gear (Spoiler Alert)
#233
Didn't really have a lot of time to dig any further this weekend; which kind of works out as I figured it would give Pagani/Pirelli/Top Gear some more time in which to work out a statement perhaps?
Funny that the red car seems to be on two different tires.
For what it's worth I like the blue on the Hype Car.

The million dollar question.
My personal view is that Pagani got just a little too greedy. They already have rave reviews about performance and craftsmanship, and rightly so. But its obvious that you don't buy a Huayra simply for going fast- if that were the case there are a ton of other options. You buy a Pagani for the whole package. Craftsmanship, uniqueness from other cars, good drivability, e.t.c. The automotive world has acknowledged this. But for whatever reason, Pagani decided it wasn't good enough. They wanted the TG record too (probably to sit nicely with the Zonda Rs time). Unfortunately for them, they got caught out and now they are in a sticky situation. Plus their squeaky clean reputation is in the dumps.
Streetrod, like you, I'm a huge Pagani fan/ mentallist, but its high time we all accepted that Pagani cheated without trying to explain it away or comparing their actions to others,
The reason this is such a big issue is because Pagani has never been caught doing something like this previously. Until now, they were pretty much the angels of the automotive industry with a squeaky clean reputation. They could do no wrong. But now they've proved otherwise, It begs the question: what other bull**** are they prepared to do? And what have they previously done without being caught? To draw from Hammonds comment: Pagani no longer have that 'innocence' imo.
I think the Lance Armstrong analogy is appropriate here.
It wouldn't have been half as bad if they hadn't issued the press release trying to convince us all that they were street tyres. Like Matt has said, how stupid do they think we are? (You know, fool me once and all that.)
As for Top Gear? They must have known, but it doesn't really surprise me. At the end of the day, its an entertainment show. Most of their stuff is staged anyway. (thats not to say I dont hugely enjoy it).
As far as Pagani is concerned, it just leaves a bad taste in the mouths of fans like myself. Whilst I still love the brand (and their cars), I've lost a little of the massive respect I used to have for them.

If this was the first time this sort of thing had happened then some of the outrage could be justified. But I have been around a long time and this sort of behaviour has been rife within the car industry since Henry Ford introduced the Model T.
In the great scheme of things Pagani are still a very young company. Up until this point their reputation has been unblemished. No one knows who authorised the tyres on the TG test and I suspect we never will. But Pagani will have learnt from this and I would not expect a repeat at anytime in the future.
We are all entitled to make one mistake, just don’t do it again:
Anyway I will leave you with this quote from the Bible as I think it sums up my thoughts on this matter very well.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone

Hey mate I have held up my hand on this one. Pagani did wrong, we can all see that. But all I was asking was we have to keep things in perspective.

You know, it's funny, but for someone who's "been around a long time" and know that "this sort of behaviour has been rife within the car industry since Henry Ford introduced the Model T" you love calling other members conspiracy theorists. I have not even been keeping track but I know of two separate occasions where you did this.

But that doesn't really matter because the main thing that potentially nullifies the result is that there was a serious risk of conflict of interest going on.
The driver, Marc Basseng, was one of Pagani's test drivers and would later on set the record with the Zonda R. It is also known that there is a fair share of tension between Koenigsegg and Pagani and this would have been an easy way for Horacio to kick the CCX down a few notches.
It seems odd that the CCX would be the fastest car round the Top Gear track, which I think favors nimbler cars, and then lose so dramatically on a more stretched out track like the Nordschleife.
Now, it might very well be that the CCX is a slower car around the Ring, but this test was not a fair attempt at showing that...
I've heard that Koenigsegg are out to set a time on the Ring with the Agera R, which would be really interesting.

So no conspiracy here guys, it really is that fast. Having said that I fully expect that time to be demolished when the McLaren P1 which was developed at the top gear track posts a time

And this is NOT the first time Pagani have been dishonest. The first time was when Andy Wallace couldn't hit 200 mph in a Zonda S. The second time was when they conducted a "test" in EVO using Marc Basseng, a Pagani test driver, on Pilot Sport Cups while the Koenigsegg CCX had to run on Pilot Sport 2 and for the first time in history set a worse time than a Pagani around the track. The third time was when they built the Zonda R which is a car created to undermine, bypass and steal the thunder from Horst von Saurma's & SportAuto's serious and objective Ring benchmarking without being forced to release control of the outcome. It's EXACTLY how Nissan did their little Ring stunt. The fourth time is when they fitted a front splitter, racing slicks and who knows what else to cheat in Top Gear. The fifth time was when they admitted lying about the Corsas to Jalopnik. The sixth time was when they lied again about the unknown Trofeos with a completely different pattern than the regular Trofeos. And this is only the lies and cheating they have been caught with!!!! Who knows what they have gotten away with?! And if it's everyone doing it, then how come companies like Nissan can gain so much from it?! How come Porsche smacked down Nissan in their own testing?! Are you one of those guys who thinks a stock GTR can beat a Zonda F around the track?!
Hyper car benchmarking was relatively CLEAN until Pagani brought CHEATING into it. And all you apologists better start realizing what this means long term for small makers like Gumpert, Koenigsegg AND Pagani. If CHEATING becomes a standard in the somewhat FAIR AND OBJECTIVE benchmarkings then the last level playing field in automotive PR is gone and professional racing cheaters like Ferrari and McLaren will mercilessly destroy them all in the field of CHEATING. What little advantage they had in building better, faster cars will be no more. So all you apologists better celebrate today because there's a funeral tomorrow. What Pagani has done is what the scorpoin did riding the frog's back across the river - it stung the frog and they both died. Some say it's a fable about how you can't change someone's nature, but I say it's a perfect example of how some people are too damn stupid to realize the benefit of a common interest. Cheating is not in Pagani's nature, I agree - they are just too damn stupid and short sighted to join forces with HONEST makers to keep it HONEST.
I have a quote from George Bush that I think it sums up my thoughts on this matter very well:
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."

This is the most stupid thinkg ive read in ages..
I wish i could neg rep you all the time..
Are you present at each test to see that everything goes accordingly?
Did you not read the reports on Ferrari prepping their cars?
Do you really think that a small player like pagani is are the ones who pioneered this?
God your hate is so evident..that everything you say is of no damn meaning

This is you and your fanatic Pagani friend:
"They are not cheating, you conspiracy loons."
"I have seen the tires and they are not cheating, you conspiracy loons."
"I saw the tires and they were different but still not cheating, you conspiracy loons."
"Ok they admit they used different tires. And yes it's probably cheating."
"... but EVERYONE IS CHEATING!!!!! IT'S A CONSPIRACY!!!!!!"
You are crazy...

No one is "without sin" and if we were to live by that rule, then there would be no one to criticize this kind of behavior.
We all have a responsibility to bring this sort of misconduct into the spotlight so that more people find out about it and something is done to prevent it in the future. If no one can criticize, then we would be stuck with the car companies doing whatever the hell they want. This is our way of having some influence over what liberties they can take, instead of just taking their BS and swallowing it whole.
This whole situation was not a "mistake". It is pretty evident that it was a calculated effort to improve the Huayra's performance, by means not allowed for this test, and Pagani should be called out and held responsible for their actions (as goes for any one else).
Arguably, the only mistake committed by Pagani was not covering this whole thing up well enough for people like mattjs33 to not find out about it.

I put too much work into the investigation and my presentation of such to have it get lost in the mire of internet hyperbole. If you want this story to have any lasting impact then you need to stop looking for conflict where there is none.
You need to remember that however strong their opposition to this story was at the beginning, both Streetrod and Artist conceded their stance as gentlemen when the facts became clear, and confirmed by Pagani themselves. Continuing to rail against these two is not helping at this point.
Yes we proved that Pagani was up to some trickery here, but realistically we cannot say that it hasn't happened several times before by other manufacturers, a theory I offered some time ago. It just so happens that Pagani got caught, a byproduct of all the attention garnered by being atop the Power Board.
Who knows whom else may have supplied a car with the boost cranked up or the catalysts removed, for just two of many hypothetical examples? What's so hard to believe is that Pagani made such an obvious, simple change and made no effort to hide it by limiting photographic access.
This thread, and all the attention it gained, to me was a victory of sorts to show that the public won't stand for being snowed so easily. Yes, I'd still like to prove that the Power Lap tires could not in any way be street legal, and I don't think that the Huayra's time should stay on the Board, but for the most part we've accomplished what we needed to.
