The sport of MMA is still young and forget that boxing has been around for 100 year or so but i do believe as time goes along we will see more and more fighters change their ways and cutting extreme weight will be a thing of the past...

[QUOTE=big_slacker;1113715]What do you guys think of the somewhat revolutionary idea of not cutting weight, or not cutting much weight for a fight? I know the idea isn't new, but it often isn't used with many of the top fighters in a division cutting down from a much larger weight, look at St. Pierre who isn't ever fat and walks around at 190, 195ish dropping down to 170.

Maynard probably walks around at an in shape 175. He's very big for his weight class, but strangely Edgar is fighting at close to his natural weight (see pic below, I posted this before but I weigh 160ish and have some height on him) and able to not only handle himself but be the best in the world. Do you think he's a freak, or do you think he simply has the stamina and recovery ability BECAUSE he isn't wrecking himself dieting for months and dehydrating for a week prior to a fight?

Meaning, should we see more people take a crack at this method? Do you think we will?

The same scenario has been questioned in the wrestling community. Guys make extreme cuts, but typically wrestle only 3
2minute rounds per match(granted they'll have a few matches in a tournament) so might be able to expend themselves more compared to MMA. Edgar had a great game plan and was solid technically-aside from getting rocked with punches in first round of the last 2 fights with Maynard His elusive in and out style and ability to continually throw combos from angles as opposed to looking for the one punch KO made the difference. BTW, he is contemplating going down to 145.

UFC 136: Frankie Edgar Calls UFC 136 Win the Biggest of His Career - YouTube

Edgar vs. Aldo would make for a very interesting match...Still, plenty of studs at 55.

Imo Aldo is not that good...the 45 div is so weak...if but just a handful of 55ers would drop down wed see a new champ in not too long...

Styles make fights and those that have run into Aldo havn't been able to figure him out-great movement and timing with his knees and legs kicks, explosive unorthodox striking-supposedly strong BJJ. Wonder how a great wrestler that was able also able to strike would do? Someone like a lighter weight Chael Sonnen(don't necessarily like him but he should have beat Silva) might give him troubles but I don't see that guy at 45 or 55.If a strong wrestler could take him down, stay heavy and pound him, might be the ticket. Edgar, does not have that style but it still would be interesting IMO.

I'd like to see Cruz fight Aldo actually. I always liked his stand-up, but didn't have a ton of respect for Cruz's wrestling until he did such an amazing job on Mighty Mouse. Cruz cuts big, he could easily meet Aldo at '45. He's smack in the prime of his career. This would be a good match-up and the timing is perfect. Few people are quick enough for Aldo. I'm still a little frustrated that Faber wasted his opportunity w/Aldo trying to keep it on the feet, he should've pushed the ground action and then used his speed, torque and feel to spin into Aldo's guard. One of few people who can pull off a maneuver like that with a serious BJJ apex fighter. But Faber's lost some of his edge, hunger and motivation recently. Cruz is hungry as hell.

If GSP is smart, he'll bring this to the ground, out-wrestle Carlos, tire him out and either get a TKO (which is VERY hard to do with Condit) or a decision.

I don't see this ending in exciting fashion unless Carlos catches him. Other than that, people will be booing another GSP non-finish win.

Dana calls Frankie #2 P4P fighter not only because he fights up a class, he also finishes and lays it all on the line. If GSP was a finisher in recent bouts, I think Dana would call Frankie #3, possibly tied with Bones Jones.

One man's opinion.
