Robert Kubica reported injured in rally accident

Kubica has now undergone another 9-hour surgery to repair his injuries.
He is currently stable.
It is my understanding that 9 hours is the absolute outer limit of orthopedic surgery.
I personally had three 8-9 hour surgeries after my motorcycle accident.
It is no fun.
Hopefully he is all finished with the major surgical stuff. But he will have dozens of minor surgeries left.

Based on the layman's descriptions of his injuries, sounds like an absolute orthopaedic nightmare. Segmental periprosthetic humerus fracture, periarticular distal humerus fracture, olecrenon fracture, and I assume the hand replant on the same side. Jeebus. He really didn't leave much intact. Sounds like he's even lucky to keep his arm.

Kubica begins rehabilitation process
Robert Kubica has begun his rehabilitation and is in "pretty good" condition mentally following his accident, one of the the doctors treating him said on Tuesday.
Kubica underwent his final surgery last week and was moved out of the intensive care unit a few days ago.
Doctor Igor Rossello said Kubica's conditions was positive and that the Pole was already working on his rehabilitation.
"He no longer needs intensive care so he has begun the rehabilitation process," Rossello, a hand specialist, said.
"He is now in his own large room so that he is as comfortable as possible. He has already started some gentle hand exercises with the slight flexing of his fingers.
"He can move his fingers slightly and has a little bit of sensitivity already in his hand. What is very important is that there is no sign of infection, which is the main concern."
He added: "I saw him this morning around 8:30am. He is doing pretty well and his condition is positive considering what he has been through. The good news is that there have been no complications following all the surgery he has had recently.
"He's no longer in pain and his psychological condition is pretty good. He's obviously keen to start the rehabilitation work as soon as possible."
Rossello admitted it was hard to tell how long will Kubica stay in the hospital's rehabilitation department.
"It's difficult to say. For the next couple of weeks, he will stay here so we can monitor his condition. During that time there is still the possibility of infection and other complications so he will have the dressings on his hand changed every few days. After two weeks we will assess his next move."
In his first interview after the accident, Kubica said he was determined to return to action this year.

Glad to see Robert is recovering.
Pino Allievi, the main motorsport man at Gazzetta dello Sport, interviewed Kubica today. I'll summarize and translate:
"...Kubica is already back to his own self, his own sense of irony, he says he's not homologated yet. He moves the injured hand " Fingers are working, I can feel them. Same with the arm. But they have to operate more, only after I will know..."
Robert is extremely lucid, his face relaxed, he's not feverish. His life is no longer in danger. "I'm sorry about what happened...It should not but I don't remember anything. My manager, Daniele Morelli explained it all to me"
"My parents came from Poland but they already left, I'm really sorry for my mom, to have made her suffer... I don't have much pain...they sedate me. After the final operation, the countdown to my return begins....One gets better after these crashes, It happened after my crash in Canada in 2007. There are new capacities and motivations that come out, I will be back stronger as a driver, with a better head game. I have to return this season and my right arm feels better than when I was hit by a drunk driver seven year ago..."
"I've asked myself why run rallies: it's training, very hard, very severe for Formula 1. It helps develop concentration....Will I do more? We'll see."
"It was nice to see Briatore, an exceptional person. Then came Alonso, Lopez, Petrov, Alesi, Liuzzi, it was nice. Racing does not allow you to see the real human side of people, too many conflicts.."
Robert would like to talk more but he gets tired quickly but for him, it's the start of a new life, a "better one" he assures us."
