I'm Scottish, so that may apply to me as well, but go for the dual-clutch option. I love the manual in the CTS-V, but if it had a paddle option that wasn't a slushbox auto, I'd have preferred that.

Also, I'm in for the test drive.

Go for broke.

Pay 5K for invidual paint and get either Estoril blue or Imola Red, classic and unique M colors.

Then pay another 5K for individual black leather/alcantara interior.

There, done.

Any color like silver or grey is going to be boring as hell.

If you wanted to really show the lines of the car like you said then I recommend a brighter color like white/red/blue. Any combination of one of those colors with tan/red/black interior is going to look great.

As for the gearbox I would go for the DCT as long as your dad is going to keep the e39.

Actually, this.

If he plans on keeping this car for a while then manual is really your only option. It will be a future classic.

I don't know about that. I owned an SMG E60 M5, and have driven more than one manual M5, and the manual transmission on both cars was awful.

Talking about driving purity in a 2-ton saloon is a bit superfluous. Sure, an M5 handles well *for its size*, but it's a long way from being an Exige. Get the DCT, and let it cruise along like the well-manicured bruiser it is.
