Nice.
Found these: 1996 Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG Consumer Reviews
Waiting on the MB dealers to chime in... I might go ask my local service department.

Get a compression / leakdown test
Make sure the trans engages quickly and shifts smoothly
Make sure the A/C blows cold
...doubt anything else will be really unbearable if it breaks.
Oftentimes cars like that are cheap because they're so expensive to fix. Can you stand it if things don't work, if lights are on the dash, if it's not perfect? If not...you should think about it IMO.

I've always wanted one of those as well.
A buddy had one in high school and it was just so badass.
I've heard head gasket failures are common on the earlier models, and some chatter about wiring harness' frying on the forums.

Chris, test drive one before you throw money at one . . . Friend had one a long time ago.
While I do like the way it looks, it's a car from the least flattering MB era in terms of everything else and not much is even remotely interesting about it. And audible laugh at Analzilla's comment about reliability - it's the exact opposite. I have an MB from this era. Only like 20-something percent of these cars sold in Europe are still on the road, because they've all been eaten up by nature or by having things physically falling off them.
E30 325 > This.
