PDK - Am I the only one who thinks it sucks?
#41
^^Good point Jon. Perspective really is everything here. UBC, all I can say is that if you hated it that much then there really won't be anything to change your mind or convince you otherwise. Go manual. Just warm that left leg up for that LA traffic.

I know you're selling cars, but PDK is not something I'd recommend to friends when a manual is available.

Not qualified to answer your question about "is the PDK better or worse than the Mas trans" since i have never driven that car (or really an F1's Ferraris out of 1st gear) - but i think the point that needs to be made here is this:
PDK - when compared to "up market cars" like a Ferrari 458, Maserati, etc that cost A LOT more typically and have a far different set of buyers does NOT deliver on driving excitement. There is a pause - its not 'super fast' and the experience of being an F1 driver is not there.
That all being said - PDK - when compared to "lower market cars" is UNREAL. Guys like me who drove G35's, BMW's, and Acuras hop into a Porsche with a PDK (Gen 1 or 2) and feel like its the most amazing thing ever. Its quick - it blipps - and going from 6th to 3rd on an off-ramp is so freakin cool. Like nothing i had ever experienced.
So the point being - to the OPs oringial question - perhaps the PDK is not up to the task based upon your driving experiences --- and that is the bottom line (of this thread). I see that point and dont have a problem (as a Porsche fan boy) of admitting that.

^ Fair enough, except that the cost of my Maz was not all that different than the cost of a decently optioned PDK 991S coupe. Perhaps there is a $10K difference with the coupe and zero difference with the cab. The 991S is just not the value that it used to be.

Oh, the 991S is clearly faster than my Maz, which weights 1000 pounds more. But, I hate to admit it, I much more enjoy driving the Maz overall. And I used to be one of the biggest Porsche fan bois around. While fast, there is no excitement or passion in driving a 991S. I drove my buddy's 997S right after driving the 991S and I much preferred that to the 991S, even though it was slower.

I drove a 911 manual in LA traffic for 14 years. I cold do it again. Although I am not sold in the 991. I'm actually thinking a manual 997TT Mk II. But I have a long time to make a decision. I still have a year on the warranty on the Maz. I'm interested in seeing what the next gen Maz GT is like. But don't think it will be available until at least 2014 and that will be a year after my Maz warranty expires. I may just extend the warranty on the Maz for a year and see what happens. Other possibilities are a low mile 612 or even a Cali as my next daily driver. The 612s are really cheap.

Thats surprising as Ive delivered 4 991 to 997mkII PDKI equipped former owners and not a one has said that it felt the same. That having been said your Dads Turbo S makes up for it with sheer HP. The damn thing is a rocketship. So understandably the lack in wow factor compared.

.....and dont get me started on the prices of new porsches. Why do you think i have a Cayman R? Not because i like it more than a 911, GT3, or Turbo....i just cant make 120-140k happen at this point

I had a client just purchase a 991S with PDCC and sport suspension+ sport exhaust- said the other 991s he drove felt underwhelming in comparison. He is sorta right. i'd be interested to hear your feed back if you drove the same set up.

You pull it, you get the gear.
SMG3 in the E60 M5 is even faster, and BMW doesn't seem to have SMG trannies going out after 30, 40K miles on a regular basis.
So one can only conclude that Porsche is being way too conservative with the programming.

Plenty exciting, nice tranny, and FAST.
