Need advice on getting my first rifle.

I would try and go at least once a month, and probably 3 times a month during the summer.
Last time I shot anything was about 8 months ago. Now that I am of legal age it's something I would like to get into. I'm not looking to have an arsenal of a navy seal, but I would like something where I buy it and after a year of owning won't go "ok, time for a new one".
It seems as if the AR15 is what I am looking for, in my eyes at least. It's something that I can buy and just live with, not want to constantly upgrade.

As far as the beginner stuff I was involved with guns from a young age, but never owned my own until about a year ago. I was originally interested in Handguns only, until I got the bug, and am currently savings and itemizing for a custom AR build, and a .22lr Tactical for practice and the wife.
It's def. good to learn the basics, especially clearing jams, proper handling, storage, etc. For me being mostly interested in Handguns I already had most of the basic knowledge, and have friends and family that were always able to help out, so I never took a class. But I def want to learn more about Long Guns, and Tactical training in general so I have a few classes bookmarked for when the time comes. After I get my Ar-15 fix then its time for either an AR-10 or Bolt gun in .308 for some sniper classes... Maybe I can get Raiff (SoCal) to come give me some pointers

What are the laws on 10/22's out there? If I were you and haven't nailed down exactly what I want I would go buy the basic wood 10/22 and go crazy on it from there. You will never regret that purchase

.22's are good to go out here, I'm pretty sure. That's what I would recommend... even a Tactical .22lr would still be fun at 1/2 the cost, and super cheap ammo. You can always keep it for practice and fun (especially for the ladies). I will prob be picking up a .22lr tactical before I even start building my AR. I've been eying this one...

Fvck yea Sean i have the 10/22 I posted above and it's the best investment I've ever made. 500 rounds for 10 or 11 bucks..can't beat that. Go buy butler creek 25 round mags and have a field day. A 22 is a must for a gun person

There are alot of differences. The AR = Assault Rifle, the .22lr is a Squirrel Killer, Plinking, Practice gun. There will be little to no recoil with a .22, you can buy a box of .22lr with 500 Rounds for about $50 vs. 20 Rounds of .223 for around $15. The Gun itself is about 1/2 the cost (depending on the AR). But of course you wont be able to get as long of a range, and it wont have as much "power".

It really seems to be ticking almost every box. I'm going to do some research on it and if I like what I see then it will probably be my first rifle. It doesn't look bad either.
And the low cost of ammo and the weapon it self sounds like it will make the weapon a keeper. Then farther down the line get a big mans weapon.
Edit - Can you put anything on it? A sight?

AR-15 = Armalite Model 15.
Assault rifles have select-fire capability and the term's relationship to the AR-15 is only one of political demonization.
Plus the AR-15 doesn't have the shoulder-thing that goes up.
