Aaaaaah, this is where my English words fail me, I thought you meant the buffer spring housed in the buttstock, and you can put gas systems in there to enable fitment of skeleton stocks etc and smoother recoil.

In the UK, we are not allowed semi auto or a gas cycling system, so the gas piston you are talking about didnt enter my mind.

Absolutely agree with using a gas piston system now

I should add, that I really like the side charging handle on my Sig 556, and actually prefer the ergonomics over an AR15 variant, all personal preference of course. So if you are like me and wanted to check out a non-AR form factor 5.56mm carbine, I would take a serious look at the FN SCAR 16S. They are available in black now instead of the rainbow FDE colors that were initially released and the prices are finally coming down. Some think the SCAR is ugly, I like the fact that it’s ugly and all business. The SCAR is lighter and balances better than both the Sig 556 and the Bushmaster ACR. I’ve been told there is one in this picture somewhere, but I haven’t been able to find it yet:

Also, 16S’ big brother the SCAR 17S in .308 has finally been released, and it looks pretty badass as well. Talk about the ultimate carbine for wild hog hunting.

SCAR is a very nice piece. I personally went beyond the 556 platform and have only 7.62 LaRue currently.

It will be my first AR and primarily for range use and target practice, and will be in 556. I'm not willing to spend too much because I'm not a huge fan of the AR15, but I'd like something solid that can take some stress (gas piston).
I have this...

went to a local gun shop today. really liked the SCAR, SIG 556, and the FN F2000... as novelties. my favorite was a piston AR carbine that was kitted out with magpul everything. light, well balanced, quick target acquisition. i shot their rental M&P carbine with the iron sights. very tight groups, i was surprised.

the owner talked up the SIG 556 and how he's shot thousands of rounds without one cleaning, not one malfunction. oh really, you've never cleaned out carbon deposits with a bore punch, ever? 'ohh well now, i run a bore snake every once in a while, hee hee.'

what makes the biggest impact in causing misfeeds? i've always thought it was the mag and springs

Why do you use a boot for the buttstock?
