New SSC supercar to beat Veyron SS... this summer?
#12
There's nothing that makes the SSC a kit car in any way, shape, or form. It's not based on any current production car. While SSC didn't have nearly the same development budget as the Bugatti (which was one of the highest budgets for any production car), it's still pretty well engineering and set up for decent aerodynamics at speed.
That being said, it's pretty nasty looking compared to all of the cars it competes against at this echelon of performance (Bugatti, K'Segg, etc) and looks cheap compared to those rivals. I know I'd much rather have the Bugatti in my garage over and SSC.

The build-quality on the car I saw was also very much on-par with a kitcar, I would say it was a small step down from some of the early Noble M12s.

Both the Veyron SS and the SSC are welcome to keep chasing their tails in the race for top speed bragging rights...but give me a GT2 RS any day and I'll gladly hand them their helmet on any racetrack in the world.

Alex, they skirted the "kitcar" term very well by creating their own billet engine block and monocoque, but most everything else is pilfered from other American cars. I had a chance to see one up close, inside and out, and spotted a lot of major components taken straight-off other American cars.

It's all in the refinement and details.

Nothing Kit about SSC.

I 100% agree that the quality and refinement are off from bugatti, pagani, etc.. but gotta give a brother some time! I think the guy has done a fantastic job thus far.

So, this guy gets up in the morning, and goes to work building *his* dream car, meeting, and indeed exceeding, performance goals that most people at VW (one of the biggest car companies on the planet) thought were impossible to achieve.
It's a huge achievement, and shouldn't be belittled in the way it has been. Does it have the panache of a Pagani? Nope, but then neither did Ford when they decided to go head-to-head with Ferrari at Le Mans, and who's going to talk smack about the GT40 these days?
I'm pretty sure I wouldn't waste the time building bespoke turn signals either...
