Just found this. I think this a smart move. Dont get me worong, I think DiMateo has done a great job, but at the end of the day he is still a relatively inexperienced coach. This is the perfect balance of repaying what he has done, and also not commiting too much.
Report: Abramovich to hand Di Matteo one-year Chelsea trial
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is set to hand Roberto Di Matteo a one-year contract as boss after remaining unconvinced by the Italian’s managerial credentials, according to The Times.
Since his appointment on an interim basis following the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas in March, the former West Brom coach has rejuvenated the Blues, leading them to victories in the finals of both the FA Cup and the Champions League.
And, while Abramovich does not view Di Matteo as a top class manager, he has accepted that the 41-year-old deserves a further opportunity at Stamford Bridge after his remarkable achievements this season.
However, any decision is unlikely to be reached until next week, meaning the former Blues midfielder will depart for his preseason holiday with his future still undecided.
The ex-MK Dons boss is believed open to the prospect of a 12-month deal though, having only forced his way into consideration thanks to his Champions League success.
Although the Italian has the backing of the club’s squad and fans, their owner still retains hope of luring former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola to west London, following the Spaniard's sabbatical from the game which begins this summer.

1. that lineup will win the epl next season depending on the bench
and will reach the semis of the cl
2. 1yr contract is what i would love
tbh i think it's what RDM wants as well, he will be under pressure to achieve and boy will he be motivated to win the league next season, which more importantly means be on his top game with the transfers this summer
hazard, modric, falcao, cavani
i think we can at least get 2 of those 4
and i honestly believe the whole balance will be restored as such
it will be even better if kalou leaves
torres and sturridge and a third striker. YES

I'd love to see Luiz move to the right side of defense and then team Terry with Cahill in the center. This would allow Luiz to be more mobile, get up the field and use his passing a little more.
Although Terry is a douche, I still think he and Lampard are integral over the next two years. They will eventually be phased out, but their leadership skills, and desire need to passed on to the next generation. It's no coincidence that we started playing well again once DiMateo stopped butting heads with these guys and let them boss the team to a certain extent.
Chelsea without Lamps and Terry next year are a team with no natural leaders, with both you have a 1 and 2 that are already Chelsea legends....and everyone in the dressing room knows it.
