The most unexpected of transer rumours have emerged: Real Madrid are after neither a striker nor a winger; but rather a goalkeeper...

Real Madrid could make a move for Independiente goalkeeper Fabian Assmann this winter as they look to tie up an early replacement for veteran keeper Jerzy Dudek, who's contract runs out next June.

Argentinean newspaper Ole reported today that the Real Madrid scouts in South America have already made enquiries about the young goalkeeper, and are determined to go forward with the deal.

Assmann has been at the receiving end of raved reviews from the Argentinean press this season, as he has shown quick reflex saves and has bailed his team out a number of occasions.

No doubt that the Independiente "Number One" would relish the prospect of moving to one of Europe's biggest hot-shots, but he would face stiff competition for second choice goalie from Jordi Codina.

Iker Casillas has been in somewhat shaky form recently, and facing a threat to his starting position could bring some healthy competition - and maybe even drive him into rediscovering his long lost best form.

Los Blancos are keen to wrap up a deal, if not this winter then definitely by next summer.
