Hughes: Robinho Can Be Manchester City’s Cantona
Manchester City manager Mark Hughes has claimed that Robinho can have the same effect on his club as Eric Cantona had on Manchester United.
The Sky Blues take on neighbours United today at Eastlands with all eyes on Robinho, who is expected to return to the side following an ankle injury.
Having smashed the British record transfer fee to sign the Brazilian over the summer, manager Hughes is clearly hoping he can have the same effect as Cantona.
The United legend famously helped to revive the Red Devils, leading them to four Premier League titles and helping establish the success they still enjoy today.
Hughes played alongside Cantona at United and, speaking to the News of the World, he paid tribute to the effect the Frenchman had at Old Trafford.
He said: “When Eric came to United, people recognized he was a huge talent and players being players they have their own egos and want to attain those high standards.
“We could never work out why he was so good because he never did any tricks in training. He just did everything correctly and simply. You can still see his impact at United with Paul Scholes and the like. My players look at Robinho in the same way.
“In fairness, some of the things he does are beyond some of our players. Technically, he is as good as I’ve seen.”
“What the players weren’t away of before he walked through the door was the way he understands the game. His football intelligence is excellent. He can be as big as talisman as Cantona,” he concluded.
