North Shore Distillery in the Chicago area has released Sirene Absinthe Verte, it's interesting!

This joins St. George out of the Bay Area as the second domestically produced post-ban absinthe in the U.S.

Heard bout this the other day:

Mansinthe
Leave it to Marilyn Manson to come up with a stellar brand of absinthe. Mansinthe ($56/bottle) is the result of a two-year collaboration between the Antichrist Superstar, Absinthe.de, and the Swiss speciality distillery Matter-Luginbühl AG, and recently won a Gold medal at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. A well-known absinthe enthusiast, Manson was very involved in the drink's development, constantly tasting samples and providing feedback. The result? A great tasting, modern absinthe for the dark, brooding rocker in your life.

Yeah there are many brands available for sale in Europe, including Mansinthe. Unfortunately not many are approved for importation (Mansinthe is not). You can import them for personal consumption, but the shipping cost for a courier is a killer.

Update on this, there are now some extremely good domestically-produced brands available, most you can buy through drinkupny.com and they ship to most states.

Recommendations:

Marteau (Distilled in Oregon at House Spirits)
Pacifique (Distilled in Oregon at Pacific Distillery)
Vieux Carre (Philadelphia Distilling)
Leopold Bros Absinthe (Leopold Bros Distillery in Colorado)
Walton Waters (Delaware Phoenix Distillery in NY)
Meadow of Love (Delaware Phoenix Distillery in NY)

I have a bottle "Le Tourment Vert" on my bar. Palatable and provides a nice punch.

I bought two bottles of Lucid for last New Years... that stuff is the most vile tasting stuff I've ever tasted. The taste alone will make you hallucinate.

I gave both bottles away after 1 shot, worst $140 ever spent.

Unfortunately LTV is not a traditional absinthe, it is artificially colored, pre-sweetened, and rather minty. That's not to say you can't enjoy drinking it of course!

While absinthe is an acquired taste for many, proper preparation is also key. If you took a shot of it, no wonder you didn't like it, it's not meant to be drunk straight!
