1995 Carrera 2 : Should I?
#21
No. It seems like this car is carrying a lot of baggage with it. Rebuild/electrical/traction/etc. All the warning lights lit up when you drove it. Also, it is not a manual and the tiptronic doesn't even seem to work. A classic porsche without a manual tranny is a huge mark down in my book, especially since the manual is becoming extinct. For $29k another 993 can be had in better shape. I can see that you want a 993 and an opportunity has arisen to get one close to home. Unfortunately, this might be clouding your judgement. I say hold out until a better one comes around, or go searching for one. I've been browsing 964's and theres plenty out there, I imagine 993's are the same. Thats my 2 cents.

Agreed. Especially if the auto trans isn't fully functioning.
Best to buy a car in better shape IMO. I wouldn't want to run into any issues by buying a fixer upper from a friend.

Don't buy a tip. Especially one that doesn't work.
Your exclamation point is a warning sensor that could be many things. My 4k mile 993 has it on because my car has a slight tune and the O2 sensor is giving off a warning. Press the button down by the shift lever and it will shut off.
This car has 10k in problems is my read. Runaway! Friend or not.
No 6 speed. No go.

you guys are awesome, love the feedback
i intended to write the post the way i did to showcase all the negatives
as for the manual vs auto: i WANT an auto (shoot me
) for my purposes and our roads and everything..
slord: PLEASE can you direct me to links of a ~$30k 993 in good shape. would love to check it out. "searching for one" from where i am is useless
i hear you on the warning lights, i too was surprised and not thrilled, but once i drove it around and later read up on it, i now know that these are issues to be dealt with and not deal-breakers per se. i've had the same issues with many cars i bought and now they run like dreams
EDIT: btw, the braking thing for example is very similar to the thing i have on the vette C5. really harmless, but definitely gets on your nerves .. not downplaying it, just saying
edbhr, lol sorry to disappoint you but if i was in the mkt for a manual it would be a TURBO
pinned: duly noted, love how you phrased it
h20: thanks, you think you can place the potential main issue of why the tip doesn't engage? i found it to be very strange, but i never drove a 993 before and never really followed the tech threads all those yrs. anything comes to mind?
i did press the button down the shifter lever bro (highlighted in the 2nd pic, right?) it didn't go away
also, so CAN the EXCLAMATION be FROM the 02 sensors? similar to a "SLOW DOWN" light in a ferrari?
or could it be that it is on BECAUSE of the braking system lights?
$10k, whoa dude that's scary
but i bet you're talking about how much it would cost in the states with LABOUR. right?
things don't exactly work the same down here bro
EDIT 2: may i please reiterate that i will not consider this car until a full PPI from the porsche AD in kuwait. of course, as a 16yo car they will hand me a $20k estimation, but i will know what actually needs to be done. 2k light-changes aren't uncommon with stealerships
THANK YOU ALL

I can't answer on the tip.
My guess is 10k at a shop to get it back to good.
I'm curious how it works there if you don't pay labor? Different than here? Elaborate.
If the light didn't go out with your button than it's got numerous issues to deal with.

edit: i guess in reading $29k i rounded to $30k and then felt $35k wasn't much of a jump. And then into any prices in the $30k's. Easy to jump the price when it's someone elses

I went through post very quickly.. So might answer some questions that were addressed.
General advice: I wouldn't buy an older car unless I knew owner(s). I knew the garage car was serviced at, (or and) arrange a proper audit/inspection of car and service records.
Earlier 993's did not have the VarioCam. Can easily be spotted under the hood as it's marked "variocam" on the intake. The latter VC'ed engines sound & feel much better and engine has much quicker response as it builds revs. IMO Its a "must have" on a 993.
The xenon's came on the later 993's and can be retro fitted.
The front turn signal/fog lamps units w/ scoops can be fitted on all 993's. You can find them at www.carnewal.com (there are US and European versions, make sure u get the one matching your car)
The narrow body 993's I like are the Carrera RS & the Targa. I feel the targa would me more suited for you and it comes with an Auto tranny. A Carrera 2 with the small RS aerokit is also a nice option.
Good luck with your quest!

- regarding labour: no mate sure labour is paid, but it's NOT as expensive as i see online when people talk about how much they are handing mechanics/ADs. i'm sure it has to do with the workforce
- exclamation still did not go out just now despite pressing it multiple times at different gear positions
i do not mind starting off with a car that has the ext/int/wheels/combo taken care off, with a good engine, good chassis, good tranny <- only thing to look into in detail right now (as all else is maintenance prone)
- the ignition is back to normal as i expected (so far at least, but i don't think it's an issue tbh)
- the electrical stuff is still on my nerves, because i cannot imagine how ANYONE can LIVE with cars that have them when they're pretty straightforward and CHEAP to fix. it is the 1st thing i address in every car i bought

for 35k, it better be a C2S with less than 60k miles on the clock, in a colour i love and an interior that is well maintained. until then, i will pray to get in heaven and drive it there
7ABEEBI MASHKOOOOOR! I read your pm before coming here and i replied there, i checked the site, and i like some of the stuff i found (and the prices).
