I drive an '83 911SC every day to and from work 25 miles each way in L.A. and find it very fun, but I actually enjoy driving and my commute doesn't include too much traffic.
I re-read Jamie's thread and couldn't find anywhere where he says the brakes or steering suck. Lack of power steering or vacuum-assisted brakes have nothing to do with the braking performance of the car.
I drive a good amount of newer high-end cars for work and they're good if you don't care for driving and need to just get from A to B. But even the newer sports cars are kind of boring at normal speeds, and besides the sound, they all drive very similar when compared to the classics.
