Rubens Barrichello posted the fastest lap of the week at Jerez on Sunday, with the Brazilian climbing to the top of the order after setting a time of 1:19.832 in his FW33. Barrichello is the only man to have completed a lap under the 1:20.000 barrier over the course of the four-day test in Southern Spain, ending his time at the wheel today almost eight tenths of a second quicker than Kamui Kobayashi.
Clouds covered the Circuito de Jerez as the teams arrived for the final day of testing this morning, with rain scheduled to hit the venue in the afternoon. It was a relatively cold start to the morning as the green light went on at the end of the pit-lane, with air and track temperatures recorded at 9°C (48.2°F) and 10°C (50°F) respectively.
Despite being able to finish the day ahead of his rivals, Barrichello once again suffered technical issues in his Williams machinery. The 38-year-old spent a lot of time in his garage during the final hours due to a car problem, with the day also seeing other victims of reliability. In the morning, Jérôme d'Ambrosio, Kobayashi and Nico Rosberg all endured set-backs behind the wheel of their 2011 contenders.
Kobayashi was second for Sauber, finishing his day of running ahead of home-favourite Fernando Alonso and Toro Rosso’s Sébastien Buemi. Sunday also saw Bruno Senna get behind the wheel of the Lotus Renault GP contender, with the Brazilian being allowed to test the R31 following Nick Heidfelds time on track yesterday.
Senna was fifth for the Enstone-based outfit with a time of 1:21.400, leading Heikki Kovalainen and Rosberg at the end of the afternoon. Meanwhile, Sebastian Vettel had a quiet day in his RB7, finishing in eighth place. McLaren's Jenson Button ended his day just behind the German in ninth, completing 70 laps of the Spanish circuit.
Rain during the closing stages of running meant that no drivers were able to improve on their times, but it did give the teams a chance to try Pirelli’s new wet-weather rubber. Only four men ventured out however, with Buemi the fastest of the drivers who opted to set a time, posting a 1.35.893 in his STR7. Alonso was two seconds slower, with Barrichello and Rosberg failing to match the duo ahead.
The Circuit de Catalunya will host the next pre-season test of 2011, with the teams travelling to Barcelona for another four day gathering, beginning on Friday February 18. It will be the last time the teams run in Europe before the first race of the season gets underway in Bahrain on March 13, just after the final test takes place at the Sakhir circuit from March 3-6.
