Ferrari has announced that 11-year-old Lance Stroll, who hails from Montreal, has become the latest member of its Driver Academy programme. At 11 years of age, the Canadian becomes the youngest member of the scheme thus far.
Suitably announced on Wednesday morning, as the Formula 1 fraternity makes it way back to Montreal - home of late Ferrari charger Gilles Villeneuve - after a year off, Stroll has been selected by the Scuderia principally for his achievements in karting.
Born in October 1998, Lance has also already achieved two wins in the Canadian Nation Championship, Rotax Mini Max category, the Coupe de Montreal and Coupe du Quebec Micro Max Championship of 2008 plus both Mini Max Championships of last year.
On top of this, Stroll also has the Tag/Cadet Florida Winter Tour to his name, which helped him be nominated as Rookie of the Year in 2008 and Driver of the Year in 2009 by the Automobile association of Quebec.
"We are pleased to welcome Lance to our group," said Luca Baldisserri, head of the Ferrari Driving Academy. "He is very young but he has already shown in karting that he is exceptionally talented. We will follow him step by step in his forthcoming events in North America and he will soon also take part in our courses at Maranello."
