Bridgestone: Still set to leave F1 - Formula 1 news - GPUpdate.net

Bridgestone has confirmed to GPUpdate.net that it has not modified plans to depart Formula 1 at the end of the upcoming season. Speculation has been generated following recent reports in the Spanish media which claim that the Japanese manufacturer is being encouraged to stay by F1 governing body the FIA.
With Michelin having left the sport at the end of 2006, Bridgestone has been Formula 1's sole tyre supplier from the 2007 season onwards but announced in early November of last year that it will be making an exit at the end of this season.
With hearsay surrounding Kumho and Hankook having seemingly resulted in neither company being interested, it is believed that Michelin will only consider a return should it be able to clearly demonstrate a tyre's role in fuel saving and the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Recent reports suggest that the FIA is now in discussions with Bridgestone in order to persuade the Kurume-based company to remain in the sport, although the latter insists that its agenda has not changed.
"Bridgestone's position remains the same," a spokesperson explained to GPUpdate.net. "It will not enter into a new tyre supply contract with the FIA Formula One World Championship series; the current contract is set to expire at the end of the 2010 season."
