Alonso fastest at Jerez
Formula One news: Alonso fastest at Jerez - GPUpdate.net Formula One
Fernando Alonso has set the fastest time of the day as testing continued at a sunny Jerez, pipping Rubens Barrichello by 55 hundredths of a second. McLaren made use of a monitoring device on the rear diffuser as Lewis Hamilton finished just under 1.2 seconds slower than Alonso.
The weather was the best the teams have experienced for testing so far this year, and with clear skies and air temperatures at a high of 26°C (79°F), the south of Spain made for an ideal comparison with those conditions expected for the Australian Grand Prix, to be started at 5pm local time (GMT+10).
Alonso, following his error and spin into the tyre barrier yesterday, completed almost a century of laps on his way to the fastest time of the afternoon; the Spanish driver lapped the track 99 times to record a fastest lap of 1.18.343. Fernando will not return to the wheel of the R29 until Australia, and issued a message for his test team: "I have to say thanks for the amazing job they have done this winter because we are really well prepared for the new season."
The Brawn GP team elected to run both cars as Rubens Barrichello narrowly missed out on the top spot again. Out on track in the morning, Barrichello racked up more mileage which included setup information and tyre evaluations, with Jenson Button almost half a second down on his team-mate's time due to being on a different programme; the Englishman began a race simulation which was halted after just twelve laps when the gearbox let him down, meaning the Brackley-based team completed a total of 74 laps between the two drivers.
Hamilton's McLaren circulated featuring a monitoring device attached to the diffuser which enabled the team to analyse airflow to the rear end of the MP4-24, which is particularly important following the introduction of their latest aerodynamics package in Barcelona last week. Lewis evaluated a variety of aerodynamics changes before a series of longer runs to survey tyre degradation. With 85 laps completed, the World Champion drove a best of 1.19.513 at 3pm local time (GMT+1).
The only other runner on Monday was Williams-Toyota's Nico Rosberg; the German's testing programme for the day resulted in him completing 123 laps, with a fastest of 1.19.783 which was 1.44 seconds down on the Renault.
