Felipe Massa topped the timesheets at Jerez on Thursday, as the teams got back into action at the second pre-season test of 2011. The Brazilian driver completed 101 laps of the Spanish circuit, finishing comfortably ahead of F1 newcomer Sergio Pérez, and Red Bull's Mark Webber. All teams were using their newly-launched cars for the upcoming season, with only HRT absent due to the squad helping Pirelli with media footage at Monza.
As in Valencia last week, the teams were treated to more bright conditions in Jerez, unlike in 2010 when the Andalusian test was marred by heavy wind and rain. However the sun was not shining on Robert Kubica, who continues to make a slow recovery in Italy following his shocking rally accident on Sunday morning. Today, each team paid their respects by adding messages to their cars.
Running began at 9am, with the track remaining open for the following eight hours. However, there was an early delay half an hour in as the Sauber of Sergio Pérez ground to a halt in the second sector of the lap. The Swiss team has since confirmed to GPUpdate.net that the reason was a planned fuel run-out in order for system checks.
By the end of the first hour and once the track action had resumed, Daniel Ricciardo stood atop the timesheets on his first Toro Rosso appearance this year; the Australian reserve driver then handed the car over to regular pilot Jaime Alguersuari, who will be remaining in the cockpit on Friday.
As conditions only improved, track temperatures neared 30°C (86°F) as Felipe Massa went fastest for Ferrari on a 1:20.709 lap time, with Pérez rejoining the track to go second from Ricciardo. At McLaren and Marussia Virgin Racing, respectively, Lewis Hamilton and Timo Glock drove the MP4-26 and MVR-02 chassis for the first time.
Shortly after 3:20pm, the second red flags of the day flew as the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg stopped in the same sector which had featured the stationary Sauber earlier in the day. When quizzed by GPUpdate.net during the afternoon, the silver arrows were yet to diagnose a cause for the 26-minute stoppage.
Just minutes after the second red flag of the day, the third flew as the Renault of Vitaly Petrov spun off the track backwards, coming to rest in the Turn 1 gravel trap. Incidentally, with Kubica out of action, the Enstone squad will be running Bruno Senna and Nick Heidfeld over the weekend.
A quiet end to the day saw little change at the top of the leaderboard, with Mark Webber making the biggest move, putting his RB7 in third ahead of Lewis Hamilton. Daniel Ricciardo's impressive run during his time at the wheel this morning was enough for him to hold onto fourth, ahead of both Hamilton and his team-mate Jaime Alguersuari, who was almost a second behind the Australian in sixth.
Thursday marks the start of the second of four pre-season test sessions this year. However, as the Formula 1 circus travels from Valencia to Jerez, Robert Kubica is left stranded in an Italian hospital following his horrific rally crash on Sunday morning.
The Thursday line-up for Jerez is as follows:
Red Bull Mark Webber
McLaren Lewis Hamilton (debut of MP4-26)
Ferrari Felipe Massa
Mercedes Nico Rosberg
Lotus Renault GP Vitaly Petrov
Williams Pastor Maldonado
Force India Adrian Sutil (debut of VJM04)
Sauber Sergio Pérez
Toro Rosso Daniel Ricciardo (morning) & Jaime Alguersuari (afternoon)
Team Lotus Jarno Trulli
Hispania Not attending
Virgin Timo Glock (debut of MVR-02)
