Question Beginner Camera Idea's

I know there have been many threads on this, but I had trouble finding one's that had my idea's in mind. So I want to spend around $600 on a new camera. I have really been inspired by all the excellent photographers here on TS, and thought I should give it a try. I know a lot of you have your personal opinions on Nikon vs Canon, but I'm just looking for the best value. I hope to eventually buy better lenses and other attachments, so something that is versatile would be nice.

Also anything I should be prepared for in terms of being ripped off? Is buying used a good idea? Anyway, thanks in advance for your opinions!

There isn't anything wrong with buying used, so long as the person selling is reputable. Since you're in the Seattle area, check out Glazer's Camera in SLU. They have a good selection of used gear, and their staff is very knowledgable. Even better, you can rent gear from them. If you rent on a Friday afternoon, you don't have to turn it back until Monday morning and it's considered just a day rental. Since Canon & Nikon are very close in what they offer, renting both setups will give you the chance to play around with each to see which works best for you.

My advice is to buy a Nikon D90. I sold my rig - which included 2 lenses, flash, memory, tripod, and a nice Tenba bag - for around $900.

If you can find just a body and a 18-200 lens, you could easily get it for $600 or less.

The D90 is a fantastic DSLR camera and will do whatever you need it to do.
