Tonight I had a dinner with some friends at a dimly lit restaurant....had the flash set at TTL...camera was on M, then AV, then P.......for the life of me I could not get the red beam to fire from the flash to help out with the focusing......however later when I put it on full auto, the red beam showed up. Any suggestions on the settings that can help out? Or maybe it is only used in full auto?

I've had this problem before. It may be that you are on servo mode. Try changing to 'one shot' and see if it works.
