Advice needed. 5D MKII or 7D?

Hi all. I would like to seek advice from anybody that has an opinion on this dilemma I am facing.

I recently sold my Rebel XSi (previously owned a 5D Mark II + 24-105L) and need to get another camera. I've decided on these cameras because I already own a limited amount of EF mount glass such as the 17-40L (replacing with a 24-70 2.8), 50mm 1.4, and soon to be 70-200 F4L/2.8L.

I have no preference and no default shooting method, so the difference between crop sensor and full frame is irrelevant. Do you think it is worth it to get the 5D MK II again or should I choose the newer 7D with its better auto-focusing system and higher FPS and pair it with a 580EXII flash? Of course, as I am a poor college kid, the cheaper the better, but I am willing to buy a 5D MK II + battery grip.

Thanks in advance.

This really sucks lol.

7D +: 8 FPS! + great AF system
7D -: Can't compared to 5D in low light, lower image quality compared to 5D

5D +: Full frame, huge performance in image quality and low light scenarios
5D -: Slow FPS (it is 20+ MP full frame!), AF sucks

If your getting rid of the 17-40 for the 24-70 and want to go wide, you'll want the 5DII. The 24mm on the 7d would not allow shooting wider shots ie landscapes and what not.

I have shot with both cameras, and liked them both. Good luck with your decision, let us know what you get!

The AF on the 5DII really does not suck. It locks in lower light than my 1dIIn and only falters in some of the most difficult situations.

I'm not the biggest fan of the 7D. I borrowed a friends for a week and I did not like it. Files were noisier straight out of camera than I would like and AF was nothing special. 8FPS is nice until you realize that for the most part you can get by with 4.

Or if you mind my rambling, 5DII for sure.

Re fps, how often does that actually matter? Are you primarily shooting sports? If not, it's pretty meaningless.

Plus, I don't know why you think the AF sucks. I would call it fair to good.

You are focusing on the wrong issues. You need to think about which camera will get you the best pics, including the hard to get ones in low light. And the 5DII wins hands down.

I've decided to get the 5D MKII with 24-105 F4L kit lens. Ironic IMO, as it was my first DSLR in which I sold after a a little bit. The rationale: 24-70 is most likely being replaced by an IS model and I can always sell the 24-105 for a grand and buy the new 24-70. I can always use my 50mm 1.4 in low light situations and it would work well.

Great points. I was thinking along the same lines as well. But no way the AF of the 5D MKII can ever compare to the 7D.
