Yeah, the 400's a beast! When I was in Hawaii back in Dec, there was a lady lugging around a Canon with a 600mm and a monopod! She could barely take any shots, though, because EVERYONE kept coming up and asking her about the lens!
When I go out to take pictures, I carry around a lowepro backpack with a 60mm AF Micro Nikkor for macro, as well as a 105mm Nikkor Micro, and a Canon HV30 video camera in the top pocket in case I want some live action. My wife carries the smaller bag that the 400mm came with. On the camera, I generally keep the 18-105mm that came with it, and then just switch out as needed. It's kind of a pain to bring all that crap around, and I feel kind of dorky, but I love the shots I can get.
I'm just recently getting into bird shots, after being inspired by some amazing ones I've seen online.
