That Nikkor 400mm must be a beast of a lens to haul around on walks. I picked up a Tamron 400mm f/5.6 back in July and while it's not that fast or sharp compared to the Nikkor, it's actually smaller than my Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8. I haven't gotten into birding yet, but your photos are awesome! I might have to take a crack at it in the near future.
