About yr and half ago drove down to santa barbara avoiding hwy 101 and 1 as much as possible...really opens up lots of smaller roads you wouldnt normally have noticed. Must have been at least double the distance so spent the night in Monterey. Randomly visited the aquarium too, hadnt been there in years.

Minor detail I left out... it is a meal.

Glad you enjoyed the route! We are lucky to have such amazing country roads within reach of SF.

My standard drive is up to 84 from my house, down 84, left to Pescadero, Pescadero to the coast, the 1 back to 84 and home, or maybe take Stage Road on 84 back to Pescardero...

Anything in West Marin and West Sonoma county. There are so many roads out there, I can find a new route everytime I go for a drive.

Obvious downsides are road quality and the amount of bike/car traffic on the weekends....

The Santa Cruz mountains have some killer driving roads. You can just take little back roads, that lead to other back roads for as long as you want to drive. Not always the smoothest roads, but really fun.
