Next-gen Vette gets small V8
Next Corvette after Ferrari

Autocar Reports: "General Motors will equip its all-new Corvette C7 with a high-revving turbocharged V8 engine as part of its desire to offer a mainstream rival to Porsche and Ferrari. The new V8 will be just over 3.0 litres in capacity and is expected to have around 400bhp. Senior GM sources claim it could rev as high as 10,000rpm.

GM won’t abandon the Corvette’s ‘There’s no replacement for displacement’ philosophy entirely, however. Other engines will be offered, including a classic big-block OHV V8 designed to appeal to the Corvette’s traditional buyers. The new downsized V8 could also find use in Cadillac’s high-performance V models, including the CTS-V range."

C7 Corvettes to Offer a Small-Displacement Turbo V8?
Corvetteblogger.com Report

According to a story by TheDetroitBureau.com, one of the engines that General Motors is planning on offering in the C7 Corvette is a European-style turbo V8 that will be slightly larger than 3 liters in displacement. This would mark a turning point for the company which has traditionally offered high-displacement V8s in the sports car. The turbocharged engine is expected to woo the hearts, minds and wallets of European performance car buyers who are usually drawn to the likes of Porsche, Ferrari and Lamborghini.

TDB claims a senior GM executive confirmed the new turbocharged engine. The 3-liter turbocharged V8 engine would feature an overhead cam design and a dry sump oil system. Power output would be in excess of 400 horsepower or about 125 hp per liter. The turbo V8 will also be an extremely high-revving engine that could handle up to 10,000 RPMs.

The turbocharged V8 will be just one of the engine offerings for the C7 Corvette and that there will still be a big-block OHV V8 to appeal to traditionalists.

GM has toyed with turbo charging in the past and in fact offered a turbocharged option as an add-on with Callaway in the late 80s. Over the four year offering, 321 B2K-optioned Corvettes were built.

TheDetroitBureau.com says that that revelation is in line with recent comments by General Motors North American President Mark Reuss who said earlier this month that the C7 Corvette will be “completely different” from previous Corvettes.

That comment by Reuss has fueled rumors and led others to believe that it means a mid-engine layout is also in the offering. About the only thing we do know is that General Motors will be investing $131 million into the Corvette assembly plant in Bowling Green as it prepares for the next generation Corvette. The first C7s expected are expected to arrive as a 2014 model.

A break from the norm for the Corvette brand but I think that would be awesome. I'd love to see a V8 rev that high in a street application. The only downside is that the power won't be as usable on the street given how high you'd likely have to rev the engine to get into the powerband.

With the turbo however there should be a good amount of low-end torque too... it would be interesting to see for sure!

I see great things for this motor in other GM applications, but I'm shocked they chose the Corvette platform to debut it.

I'm curious to see what sort of fuel economy a turbo v8 would produce compared to their current engine setup. Typically the Vettes have amazing fuel economy since highway speeds are using very low RPMs...

I am definetly intrigued with the new engine. I love the big ass v8 though.

Considerably worse as a general rule of thumb. However, if the rated output is 400 hp, it will probably run very little boost.

Silly idea all around. They're not going to attract Ferrari/Lambo buyers with a vette with a small engine, nor are they going to attract vette buyers. I'll be curious to see the sales numbers, as well as whether or not the engine is built to take significant boost or is an eco-whatever afterthought.

As long as they offer a normal big block V8, I'll be happy
