1 Series M Coupe or a used M3, that will be the question of many!

So with the new 1 Series M Coupe starting at a tad under $48k USD I am sure many buyers will face a similar dilemma; to buy a new car or a lightly pre-owned M3. Autoblog notes: So in the end personal preference will prevail, or will it?

Dr. Segler responded to those worried about the 1 Series M Coupe being better than the M3 with "the M3 is the car of M, the icon, playing in another league. The best feeling is still in an M3." So even though BMW's product and technology PR rep Matthew Russell described the 1 Series M as "an M3 in a 1 Series body," the 1 M is distanced from the M3 by its limited options, including the fact that the M button on the steering wheel only adjusts throttle response, nothing else.
On the other hand, when discussing concerns that the 1 M was engineered so as not to step on the M3's toes, Segler said "It was never held back at any stage. It is as good as it can be, this was exactly the car to build." When we asked how much one would have to spend in order to make it better than an M3, we were told that it would make more sense to buy an M3. "It is not a replacement for the M3," he also said. Russell added, "The M3 is in the middle of its life, it has a long way to go.

The 1 M coupe looks good in pictures, but man, compared to the M3 it just looks like a 1 series with a nice bumper. The argument from BMW makes a lot of sense. . . this car is a 1 series turned M. The M3 isn't really considered a 3 series turned M, it's a beast of it's own, a whole different culture.
If I wanted to spend 50k on a premium 2 door small car with a huge engine that I could drive everyday, I'd buy the 1 series M coupe. But that is not the case, and never will be. 09 M3 all day.

I'm with this guy. That MSRP + mark up, you can probably get a new M3 anyways..

Difficult question and of course I'll have to drive a 1M first. The e92 M3 has been the best all rounder that I've ever owned and that's including the e39 M5. However, if the 1M comes through with its claim to bring back the feel of the e30 M3 it will be truly hard to beat.
