I'm not doing crossfit u fagget, but interesting to know that the gym by me has 375 annual members... Nice lil operation for a twenty-something .... at the cheapest annual membership price, thats $700k gross for basically 9,000 of shitty industrial spac, tires, hammers, freight weights, and piping ... has me thinking....

SoCal is an unknown quantity at this point
I've spoken with a buddy in Houston about possibly opening one together. The startup $$ is the killer, but once they get going, they're pretty much all profit.

Startup cost must be significantly cheaper than your typical gym. How much could it possibly cost to outfit a place? I have to assume the $/psf is greater than the cost of goods.

It depends on how big you want to start, equipment, advertising, help, rent, etc. These things that you would already have taken into account, plus utilities, an umbrella insurance policy, etc. I think that if I wanted to open a CF "Box" here in Tulsa, it would be ~$1-$1.50/sf in rent, plus at least $20K (low, low end) for equipment, etc. I wouldn't even think about opening one without $100K to throw down on it to get me through a year of not being profitable.

But this is just me not knowing shit about opening, starting, or owning a business. I'd likely seek out a friend that already owned one, consult another friend about a Business Plan, a few CF'ers about programming, and a lawyer to set up a LLC, just for starters.

Agreed ^

This was me just thinking outloud; I didn't even think twice about the operating expenses, my brain was too focused on the build out cost.

Figured insurance/attorney fee's wouldn't be anything outrageous or more than your normal business, due to the fact that each member signs a liability waiver.

Also... only thing is whether or not this whole thing will just be a fad?

It's been around for ~10 years and is only gaining popularity. It is here to stay.

Like jazzercise!

I was actually joking about that with my wife because she does Zumba, and then I googled it and found out jazzercise is still grosses 96m worldwide. WTF?

Anyway, I was wondering to myself earlier today about the profitability of a CF franchise. Not because I wanted to personally start one, but just curious.

I know Raiff saw on FB, but today I randomly decided to do my 35# KB overhead any way AMAP or 200 reps in 10 minutes thing. Haven't done it in months and I hit 200 with time to spare. My overall fitness is improving despite losing weight, which I suspect is mostly fat. Haha, ever hear of a cutting diet that involves 60+% carbs?

Had a nice little run today. It's only 75 here but I keep forgetting the PacNW is humid. Came home drenched in sweat and my wife presented me with a plate of fingerling potatoes and soy-steak strips. Normally a meat and potatoes dish like that is full on awesome but damn it didn't fit after a hard ass trail run. Ate it anyway and it was still good.
