Weight of car paint

Weight of car paint
Short story long;
While having lunch with a friend of mine he started talking about a possibility that had arisen which would involve him working as a car salesman for high-end cars as Ferrari etc. While on the subject we started talking about old Ferraris and funny facts. I recall that the F40 has such a thin layer of coat because of weight-savings and that you can actually see the cf weave if you're just close enough.
Thus, how much does the average paint job weigh?

Depends on the car, depends on the type of paint being used.
If you're talking the e-coat, primer, and paint, it will usually fall somwhere between 7 to 11 lbs or so. Maybe more, maybe less. Just trying to give you an idea of the average paint job.

I'm not a painting specialist, but a quick search reveals that a typical paint job is about 4 kg (or 8 lbs for those of you still using antiquated units ). A luxury paint job involving many coats of clear paint will of course be more.
Painting in thinner layers doesn't strike me as the most effective method to save weight...
Let's also remember the old story how the classic silver finish on German race cars came about: They had to sand the paint off a car before a race because it exceeded the maximum weight allowed!

This is correct. It depends on how many coats and the size of the car. With the e-coat, primer, light filler (if any), two base coats, and the standard 3 clear coats you end up between 6-15 lbs.
