Of course, I'll then proceed to drive it in the rain, but what the heck it will be fun to see while it lasts.

Stay tuned...glad a few of you are enjoying the teardown shots.
Is this the first time you have needed to do such extensive maintenance to the F40, or is this something that is necessary after a certain amount of years? Just wondering about how these cars hold up after 20 years of driving.

What was done to his car was not typical.

It had some coolant seepage at the head gaskets, probably because it sat for the first 14 years with only 200 miles on it. That's the frequent downside of garage queens - you get a low mileage car, but it needs refurbishing to turn it into a proper driver. And besides, it will be fresh and very carefully assembled when done - I'll get the pleasure of breaking it in all over again.

Also, not too unusual to do an engine out full service on an 18 year old car of this type. Even if it is atypical, it's nearly done so no looking back now.

You nailed the right question: this is what can happen to car that has sat around for almost 20 years - it's got 2,500 miles on it. No doubt it would have been in better shape if it had 25,000 miles on it and driven regularly.

I'm going to try to make up for lost time...
