That's old school know how right there. I can remember a similar process back in the day with my 70 Chevelle SS and it's multi coat lacquer/clear.

When you take away the clear coat, how do you reapply it? Is it as simple as putting a special type of wax?

Once it's gone, it's gone. To reapply it must be sprayed/painted back on.

That is true. We do apply a coating after the polishing process that "seals" the finish and adds a measurable thickness to it.
