Listen, you could ALWAYS wait for the latest, greatest. If you can- test drive both the 06-08 CS and the 09-present CS.
The Cayman won't change for a bit. Then what? Buy a new one or - wait again- for the used one??
When does it stop?
And yes, they made changes to the way the car feels 08vs09.

I just read through all of this and quickly determined a couple of things:
1. If you are short and gay, buy a Lotus
2. Get an 09 Cayman S.
More importantly, every member here can give their opinion and you still won't know what to get. You have to make this choice. Follow stoppie's advice...go test drive those model years, determine which one you like and then just GO BUY THE FREAKIN CAR! You want one, prices on caymans aren't going to change all that much in 6 months and there's no sense in delaying the purchase of a fun car.

The '09 Cayman S will be great. If it's your first Porsche (which it sounds like), then even better - you'll find out what you like, don't like, etc. Also, you won't be tainted like I was by owning a 911 first.

Notice I said 996 Carrera - that doesn't mean 996 GT3 or 996 Turbo. Though in all honesty, I'd probably still rather have the '09 Cayman S. All the DFI update cars are really outstanding.Originally Posted by IIVVX

i assumed you were implying all 996 variants. im not disagreeing that caymans are fun little cars but the performance envelope on a 996 GT3 or 996TT is pretty compelling, especially when prices are compared.Originally Posted by Chris from Cali

If you haven't driven a Cayman S yet, you should - there's some mid-engined magic there. That's why I was so hyped on the Cayman R.
Get a base 2005-2006 997 C2 / C2S and be done with it, such an awesome car. New Cayman will be out in probably 2 years I guess if you need to know.
The Cayman seems like an awesome car. It has a near perfect weight distribution, a reasonable amount of power, and a good slate for mods.
The next generation Cayman is supposed to get a flat four engine, but power figures are unknown. Either way, it's going to be a huge step in the evolution of the Cayman, so I can't see the value of the Caymans your looking at going up.
Or, do what PorscheFanatic says, get a 911. Either way, you can't go wrong, but if you did get a Cayman S, which is slower than the 911, you would be able to save some money for mods and possibly best a C2S.1.
Good luck, and what every you do I hope it all works out for you!
