My SLS Review...
#36
I have been looking at a whole host of cars over the past several months. I spent about 1.5 hrs test-driving an LP570 superlegerra. I went and drove the scuderia. I even considered the DBS convertible and Bentley Conti Supersport.
Now, I love the 599. It is an awesome car. I had the vacuum bypass on the exhaust fixed so it was always at full power but it was never intrusive or annoying. And the POWER.....omg. Hit the hammer and it just takes off at full scream.
My cars get regular usage. I used the 599 to run errands, to go to dinner, shopping, even to Home Depot, etc. In many ways, it is great.
All opinions to follow are strictly based on my own, personal experience and my own quirks.
I believe you should own a car based on the way you use it. Not on the way you imagine you will use it or the way you want to use it. i.e. if you want a track car, get a track car. If you will use the car most of the time on the road, make sure it does what you want it to do on the road.
My own experience with ferraris has not been great. They all ended up needing various things fixed or replaced. They creak. The windows make funny noises when I raise or lower them. They all developed rattles (F430, 612 scag and the 599). The radio and navi in the 599 are truly impossible to operate. And yes, I rarely use the radio and yes, the engine noise is more than enough (I had the vacuum bypass on the exhaust fixed so it was permanently as loud as possible), but sometimes it is nice to have the tunes playing. Or hands-free phone access.....or cupholders....etc. Creature comforts are nice when you actually use the car a lot. That is why I used to love my 997TT. However, even after ECU mod and fabspeed exhaust/cats, etc, the sound was not very inspiring.
These cars also have their own drama. People take pics everywhere. Even drive dangerously around you to try and get some pics or vids on the road. Impossible to get gas without someone wanting to talk or ask questions or get pics....and I am a friendly guy so I will talk to anyone and try to spend a little time. But after a while I was getting gas late at night to avoid the drama. The 599 is also quite a large car which can sometimes suck when there are narrow parking stalls.
The power and torque of the 599 is addictive. Drop the hammer and BOOM....you are in a different time zone with your own sonic boom to boot.
The SLS is different. Very understated but elegant. Engine always burbling and popping and ready to go at a moments notice also. Almost as fast but super super usable on a day to day basis. Smooth. Comfortable. And all the creature comforts and niceties you could possibly want. Cheaper to own, cheaper to maintain, cheaper to insure, etc. Less drama. People seem to appreciate the car but won't chase me around the parking lot. It feels more special to me. It is a car that I appreciate the more I drive/own it. It just does everything I need it to do and does it well. It has an AWESOME engine noise. The doors just add a little something extra. I think Jay Leno's garage internet segment sums it up nicely. As he said, he loves his porsche carrera but it scrapes. The car that got the most milage and use was the Mclaren SLR. I feel the same way. It is like having a secret. This fairly conservative, somewhat elegant mercedes has a monster inside it that I know about and get to enjoy. Similar vibe to the Aston DBS, IMHO. I guess I am a fan of these AMGs since I now have their 6.2 engine in the SL63, the S63 and now, the SLS.
So there is a quick summary. No time for more right now. I will include some requisite pics of the 599 and the SLS. The pics are from my phone, so they are poor quality. Sorry.

The engine was built by a Turkish person. We are proud of you Ozan Issız
Seriously considering the SLS after this review
Great write up mate. Thumbs up
