What would you buy? A SLS or a used 599 GTB?
#43
Chris,
I like your style!
The only small problem that I have is with the looks of the 599. When they first came out, I never really lusted after one.....
And even today after the 599 has grown on me, I still don't yern for the looks.....
The SLS on the other hand is a real Jekyl and Hyde. From some angles it looks amazing and from others it looks like the bi-product of a Bread box that has had sex with a Canal Boat.
Now back to the colors.
Would Red with Beige be to cliche??? Perhaps a Matte Black or Grey, however they could quite easily be the flavour of the month this year and not the next.

How do you feel about the SLS?
Have you driven Either car?? - also, how long do you typically keep your cars or, better yet- how long do you PLAN on keeping your next car??
-need more info before I offer more advice.

SLS I spent a week with in the mountains and the car is just quiet and has no presence. Worst part of the car is you have to pull the door down as you get in. The couple in the SLS on our trip constantly were asking people to close the door for them. Why wouldn't Mercedes put a push button close in a car that costs this much?

Ohhhhhhhhh Now here's an important peice of the equation- I didn't know you 'just weren't in love with the looks'. Hmmm puts an interesting twist.

Let's just say, if I absolutely loved the looks of the 599, this thread wouldn't exist.....
I think that the extra HP, the sound that can be produced especially from an aftermarket exhaust and the whole Ferrari Passion is what is calling out to me!
It should also be noted that I am of Italian decent and hold an Italian Passport or Passoporto to my fellow countrymen which makes me feel nostalgic to this Brand.
The SLS on the otherhand is just an out there porn mobile. SLS literally stands for Smells Like Sex!! Not to mention the exhaust which sounds like Thunder!!
Do I rate the SLS in the Looks department? At first absolutely not. After a seeing it in person you bet ya!
Have I driven either car. Not yet..... I'm not one of those guys that likes to bother a Car dealer until I am sure what I want. (Hence this thread) I am in sales myself and I really get over time wasters. Also I think that it's worth mentioning that the SLS is not here yet & should be available to drive in the next 4 - 8 weeks. I could drive at least 4 - 599's, however I am planning on doing them back to back with the SLS for a real comparison.
In response to h20skier - Alot of people complain about the door thing in the SLS, however I am fairly athletic at 5' 10' and my wife is a trophy 6' 1' which means that we both should be ok reaching up to close the door.
I usually plan to keep my cars for 4 years, however I only ever seem to own them for 1.5 - 2 years. The New RS I have on order will be here on the 21st Sep and I plan to keep that forever along with my GT3 Cup which has an amazing heritage. I guess only time will tell.
Probably 2 years for a 599???? & maybe 3 - 4 for an SLS?????
It's important to also note that I can buy a 599 for $365 USD and the SLS for $455 USD. So there is an obvious saving in buying a 599.

what? why would you buy a car you aren't in love with......Keep looking is what I would say. Anything priced like these cars better SCREAM buy me to you.

As for the high doors, I asked the same question and was told the issue was with weight. They worked to keep the weight down in every aspect of the car that the idea of adding motors at the highest part of the roof line was a non starter.
I have heard they may offer a strap (like the old gullwings had) for people of "less stature."

Thunder exhaust. I honestly think that guy must have added an aftermarket.
I can't believe that you have driven the car and would say that it is quiet? The SLS is by far the best sounding AMG that I have ever driven. It can be quiet if you idle around in C mode but that is not what it is for. The downshifts are pure sickness.

wow $465k USD for the SLS....Wait for the 12 month $200k standard MB depreciation curve is what I would say.
I will say it is the ONLY MB I've seen in 10 years that made me think twice about one. Great lines and I really have always liked the Gullwings of yesteryear.
