A 996 C2 is, and always will be, undesirable because it is the ugliest 911 variant in history - nobody will miss the remaining ones when they too disappear in a cloud of the inevitable engine failure. I don't think anyone's ever really liked that car, even when it was new.
The 996 GT3 RS on the other hand, I believe will be a better collectible than the 997 variants. Simply because it was made in an era where Porsche was still sensible and they didn't make a billion of them. And it is actually quite pretty.

IMO the 996.2 is a beautiful car. The IMS issue is a little scary though and the lack of a LSD is not ideal.

I have a Black Turbo S. Simply love it. Carbon brakes, full leather interior, GT2 10 spoke wheels a few other bits + some mods ;-) It's not a 997 or a 993, but it is MY 911 and it's awesome, ridiculously fast, terrific handling and fantastically reliable. What more could I want for a car that I drive every day in the summer. Pic taken by my buddy Chris.

Yep^^^^ I'd love to pick up a 996 C4S...
The 996 represents a whole new change for Porsche as a company. Complete re-focus of understanding who they are and where they need to go in order to succeed. The 993 is the Pillar of what Porsche was and where they came from.
The 997 is Porsche's new 993.
during the last 10 years there's been more exciting cars released, then probably ever before. Competition was, and is even more so- FIERCE. So the company adapted and over came. Minus the last 12-18 months of 911 sales; the 997 is a real triumph of a car.

As long the car is an MKII then I have no hate for it, sure the interior isn't as nice as it's younger brother but it's still a nice car. All you need for it to look modern is the GT3 front and sides

I wonder if timing and the economy played into the desirability (or lack thereof) of the 996. As the prices declined dramatically over a short timeframe, its exclusivity diminished greatly and the "masses" were able to afford them??? I know the "motor issues" and rampant stories of such also probably played into it as well.
