Random thoughts on the 996 ...

I wonder if timing and the economy played into the desirability (or lack thereof) of the 996. As the prices declined dramatically over a short timeframe, its exclusivity diminished greatly and the "masses" were able to afford them??? I know the "motor issues" and rampant stories of such also probably played into it as well.
Now, you can 599's relatively cheap compared to what the market was. - Nothing was left un-touched by the economy when it comes to toys as these.

i think he means RMS issues on non GT block cars (so not the turbo or GT2 or GT3). I don't know how big an issue it is beyond the interwebs though, I've never known anyone personally who had a problem.

Had three of those 996s. A targa, a turbo and a turbo S and I loved owning them. They are beautiful cars in their own right and about the headlights, you get used to them and begin to appreciate their shape especially with the mkII variants.
Looks wise I agree about the C4s taking the cake. It still looks good even these days.

I had an RMS failure on my 996 C4S. Not a big deal, though. All that happens is you get a little wet spot under the engine. The car still runs fine. As I recall, even without the warranty, it's about an $800 fix. More of a nuisance than anything else.
I thought the 996 was fine. Looks-wise, if I look at a 996 GT2 or a 996 C4S, the only 997 variant that looks better to me is the GT2/GT3. I'd take the 996 over any regular 997 (looks-wise only - 997 performance is clearly superior).
I liked the interior as well. I had a '99 C2, which was a bit cheap, but my C4S had full leather w/ aluminum trim, and it was a really nice place to be. Manual transmission and the Porsche sport exhaust, and I loved that car.

Okay, purported "motor issues" ... is that better?
